Read @scoutscanada's newest and youngest-ever national commissioner @KaelemMoniz in @TheHubCanada today, writing about the volunteer crisis Canada is currently facing.

This country cannot run without volunteers.

"Statistics Canada shows more than a 20 percent drop in formal volunteers from 2018 to 2023—what some charities like ours are calling a “historic decline.” 

It also shows consistent year-over-year declines since COVID-19, both in the number of people participating and in the total hours contributed. Statistics Canada reports a further 19 percent decline in volunteers who participate in improving their communities."

"Our waitlist numbers are in the thousands. This isn’t because of a lack of enthusiasm, but because we require enough trained adults to ensure the safety of our kids and volunteers. We need civic infrastructure."

My heart goes out to Tumbler Ridge on this sad day. Kids shouldn't have to go to school worried for their safety, or grieving their friends.

I can only think of the community in this difficult time, and wish fortitude to the kids and families who will need it most.
