We are excited to announce that our Foot Prints podcast is up and running! At the same time, we will continue bringing you abridged stories of the incredible elders we are interviewing.
This week, we had the honor of interviewing Hon Rtd Justice Mary Maitum. She is a true inspiration. The words that lingered in my mind long after we left her home were - Lawyer, Leader, Legend.
Mary was one of two women who were part of the Constitutional Review Commission that drafted the 1995 Constitution. Being in her presence felt like being with one of the mothers of a 'reborn' nation.
Mary shared her journey of struggle and triumphs. She experienced 6 miscarriages in 10 years but was finally blessed with 2 sons. She is grateful for her supportive spouse who weathered the storm with her.
Mary is a co-founder of Finance Trust Bank, which started as an NGO in 1984, to allow women to save and access credit when other banks didn't have products to enable low-income women to access finance for their businesses.
As a judge, Mary was posted to Gulu during the height of the LRA war. She remembers having to barricade her door at night, hoping to make it alive the next day. While a judge, Mary applied a social justice lens to her work and sought to understand the social underpinnings of the cases before her.
Mary's love for music comes from her days at Namagunga. The school required the girls to listen to classical music for 3 hours every Sunday and identify the different instruments being played. This practice not only helped Mary to love music, but also taught her patience and deep listening.
To hear more of Mary's incredible story, tune in to the Foot Prints podcast. We are honored to share the wisdom of such amazing elders with you.

“You referred to the gold that is hidden inside a woman. For me, it is not hidden, I have always seen it. It is not something we had to discover, it has always been visible. That is why it is easy to promote gender equality.” President Kagame | #IWD

Twitter is so funny. Y'all think once women hit their 40s, we turn into the Golden Girls. I'm living more in my 40s than I ever did in my 20s.
At 20, you seek the validation of others.
At 30, you finally seek validation from yourself.
At 40, you realize you were already enough.
This morning we hosted the Members of Parliament on the Budget Committee to showcase the Bank’s interventions and provide clarity on UDB’s mandate and strategy. The discussion was on “Financial Intervention for Sustainable Development”.
