Grateful to @T4PAfrica for publishing my paper titled “Charting Africa’s Agency in a Changing Global Order”, with a particular focus on peace & security: https://t.co/fElFf5SHUG
The fact that the paper was released on #AfricaDay gives it special meaning. Africa Day, marking this year the 63rd anniversary of the #OAU, is always a moment not only to take stock of how far the continent has come, but also to reflect on what lies ahead.
In today’s troubled global environment, the need for #Africa to exercise renewed agency in addressing its peace and security challenges has never been more urgent. @_AfricanUnion already has the necessary normative, policy and institutional tools. The real challenge is their effective implementation — through renewed commitment, strategic clarity, and creativity.
That is the central argument of the paper
Happy Africa Day!

The Peace Agreement remains the basis of legitimacy for the transitional government in South Sudan. Unilateral changes to the Agreement are not in accordance with the letter and spirit of the Agreement and will not bring peace to South Sudan. We call for an immediate return to dialogue among all parties to the Peace Agreement.

With the passing of former President Festus Mogae, #Africa has lost a distinguished servant. He was a true African statesman: principled, thoughtful, humble, and deeply committed to peace, dialogue, and democratic governance.
I had the privilege of working with him, notably in the context of the @_AfricanUnion High-Level Panel for Egypt established by the #PSC in July 2013 and which also comprised former President Alpha Oumar Konaré of Mali (Chair) and former Prime Minister Dileita Mohamed Dileita of Djibouti (Member). Two of these pictures were taken during a meeting in Gaborone in May 2014 to consult on the Panel’s recommendations ahead of the submission of its final report to the AU Summit in Malabo in June 2014.
May his soul rest in peace.
"We are not here to impose a political or ideological model on South Sudan. We are here to demand the basics: peace, responsible use of public revenue, and an end to the abuse of assistance meant for the South Sudanese people."
