This article is further proof that it's not enough to merely replace Trump in 2020. At some point, people who love people have to address the forces, culture, corruption, corporate abuse, & bipartisan careerism that created/elevated Trump to the presidency https://t.co/wEMZcrgkhx
In Opinion
In an anonymous Op-Ed, a senior Trump administration official says he and others are working to frustrate the president’s “misguided impulses.” https://t.co/qW1IoM3AYY
The federal judge in my case was very upset that my lawsuit revealed that law firm Davis Polk & Wardwell LLP had a history of representing GEO Group.
Not staffing the attorney who told their law firm to drop GEO group as a client = irrelevant? Ok.
Anyway, thanks @ddayen.
Lawyers for GEO Group, which operates the Delaney Hall ICE prison in Newark, argued in a recent court filing that the company is exempt from legal action because it is subject to government oversight—which the Trump administration has largely destroyed.

When Israel kills women and children, silence from many of our elected leaders.
When they start a war, still silence.
But when they go after the oil economy, now that crosses the red line.
A bunch of states vow to keep up fight against Live Nation/Ticketmaster b/c the DOJ's settlement does not "address the monopoly at the center of this case"
The Justice Department’s lead lawyer in the Live Nation trial, David Dahlquist, didn’t see the settlement until this morning, even though a term sheet was apparently signed last week.
So the lobbyists left the DOJ’s lead litigator out of the loop. Insane.
This case against TicketMaster/Live Nation was supposed to go to trial this week. The DOJ, through multiple administrations, has been preparing for years.
Trump just settled it instead, after firing the head of the antitrust division.
There is apparently no amount of corruption too obvious to scare Trump away from it.
"Four firms — Perkins Coie, WilmerHale, Jenner & Block and Susman Godfrey — fought the orders, quickly receiving favorable rulings from district court judges.
Nine others struck deals with Mr. Trump, most notably Paul Weiss, drawing sharp criticism."

Law firms that stood firm and fought against Trump’s bullying should be lauded for their leadership and rewarded with patronage from anyone who seeks fearless resolve in their legal representation. The takeway: never to turn over your lunch money. https://t.co/9fqifsMoaK
Surrendered is a bit generous.
"The first firm to fold was Paul Weiss, whose chairman at the time, Brad Karp, undertook what Ruth Marcus of The New Yorker described as a 'desperate' campaign to reach a deal with Mr. Trump."

Breaking News: Brad Karp resigned as chairman of the major law firm Paul Weiss after emails between him and Jeffrey Epstein became public. https://t.co/LBgMqwDn0r
"Don't feel sorry for us. We don't need your pity....
Don't do anything special. Just tell the facts. Well, we know that's not going to happen.
Why? Because the facts are going to upset the balance."

Caving is one way of looking at it.
Either way, Chuck Schumer is either a weak fighter or he's not actually fighting.
He can't meet the moment. The scale of the problem and the opposition are too much for him.

A wave of authoritarianism is reshaping the world. Trump isn’t leading it—he’s learning from it. See how he’s borrowing from his peers such as Orban, Putin, Bibi, & Modi, in Zeteo’s new breakdown of the Global Authoritarian Playbook.

National guardner?
National Park Service workers laid off, and now the National Guard is doing landscaping in DC. Felon Trump really turned soldiers into gardeners.
New York Democratic officials who've declined to endorse Zohran Mamdani so far:
- Gov. Kathy Hochul
- Sen. Chuck Schumer
- Rep. Hakeem Jeffries
- Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand
- Rep. Laura Gillen
- Rep. Tom Suozzi
- Rep. Dan Goldman
- Rep. George Latimer
Employees have fundamental rights.
These law firms are full of *lawyers*/employees who are scared to file credible law suits against their law firm/employer.
Why? There's a high chance such lawyers would be blackballed by the "legal industry" Paul, Weiss hoped would "rally."
My friend @DavidLat just published an email Paul Weiss chair Brad Karp sent to the firm. This excerpt is the most chilling. This is how constitutional republics die -- when rivals see a violation of fundamental rights not as an injustice, but as a business opportunity:
"This is a[] consequential moment for our country. It is...easy for commentators to judge our actions from the sidelines."
"The moment" has been consequential since 2016.
Paul Weiss, once again, failed the test. The correct response was to find a way to not settle/be bullied.
This letter from Paul Weiss chair Brad Karp makes things worse. Basically offers rationale and justification for everyone else following in Paul Weiss’s footsteps and capitulating to Trump. BLUF: We capitulated and everyone else should as well.

The capitulation of Paul Weiss & Columbia are symptoms of the decline of American leadership. Downshift from:
"There are few earthly things as beautiful as universities." JFK
To:
"The Universities are the enemy." JD Vance
What Trump wants from his presidency is to collect tribute and force people to bow to his will. That's exactly what he's gotten Paul, Weiss to do. Deeply embarrassing behavior from one of the most powerful law firms in the country.
