Congratulations to the 9 newly elected members of the Committee on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities #CRPD from🇦🇲🇧🇯🇨🇳🇪🇹🇯🇴🇰🇿🇱🇹🇵🇼🇼🇸
🇨🇭expresses its full support and wishes you all the best for your important mandate!
Europe's regulatory culture created an economic spiral of doom:
• Talent leaves
• Companies avoid investing
• Innovation dies
• Economy stagnates
• More regulation follows
This is why memes like "Europoors" exist.
“To all the world’s leaders, I remind you of your responsibility to ensure respect for international humanitarian law as set out in the Geneva Conventions.
These are universally accepted and binding norms developed to preserve the very bare minimum of humanity." - @volker_turk
Casualties and the devastating impacts of the conflict in #Lebanon are rising.
Israeli airstrikes continue to expand across the country, deepening civilian suffering.
@UN and partners are stepping up efforts to provide support.
But people need an immediate ceasefire. More ⤵️
BREAKING:
🇮🇱🇮🇪 Israel began firing on Irish peacekeepers in Lebanon
"This morning, two peacekeepers were injured after an IDF Merkava tank fired its weapon towards an observation tower at UNIFIL's headquarters in Naqoura, directly hitting it and causing them to fall.
The injuries are fortunately, this time, not serious, but they remain in hospital." - UNIFIL reports.
Multiple reports say that they were Irish peacekeepers who had previously refused to withdraw on Israeli orders.
We are gravely concerned by widening hostilities in the Middle East & fear that a large-scale invasion by #Israel into #Lebanon would only result in greater suffering.
@volker_turk urges all parties to end the current path of destruction & ensure accountability.
War in Lebanon could lead to further escalation involving outside powers.
I fully support the proposal for a temporary ceasefire—allowing for the delivery of humanitarian relief & paving the way for the resumption of serious negotiations for a durable peace across the Blue Line.
We must avoid a regional war at all costs.
I’m gravely concerned by the dramatic escalation of events in Beirut in the last 24 hours.
This cycle of violence must stop now.
All sides must step back from the brink.
The people of Lebanon, the people of Israel, as well as the wider region, cannot afford an all-out war.
The number of people who have crossed into Syria from Lebanon fleeing Israeli airstrikes — Lebanese and Syrian nationals — has reached 100,000. The outflow continues.
UNHCR is present at four crossing points alongside local authorities and @SYRedCrescent to support new arrivals.
More than 50,000 Lebanese and Syrians living in Lebanon have now crossed into Syria fleeing Israeli airstrikes. Well over 200,000 are displaced inside Lebanon.
Relief operations are underway, including by UNHCR, to help all those in need, in coordination with both governments.
#Lebanon
"Have we not learned anything from what has been happening in Gaza over the past year?
This is not normal and this needs to stop.
World leaders gathering in New York need to prioritize bringing this conflict to an end." - @UNHumanRights
I've just invoked Art.99 of the UN Charter - for the 1st time in my tenure as Secretary-General.
Facing a severe risk of collapse of the humanitarian system in Gaza, I urge the Council to help avert a humanitarian catastrophe & appeal for a humanitarian ceasefire to be declared.
#Gaza
“Silence the guns and return to dialogue – the suffering inflicted on civilians is too much to bear. More violence is not the answer. It will bring neither peace nor security.“
- @volker_turk, @UNHumanRights Chief
Civilians – including @UN personnel – must be protected.
Civilian objects – including hospitals – must be protected.
UN facilities must not be hit.
International humanitarian law must be respected at all times.
"The number of people being killed so far is so staggering that this cannot be collateral anymore"
@UNLazzarini tells @amanpour that four @UNRWA shelters were damaged in the📍#GazaStrip and "people sheltering in @UN facilities are not more safe than anywhere else"
Nowhere is safe for the people of #Gaza as intense bombardments continue, causing devastating damage and loss of lives.
Humanitarians cannot safely access people in need and warehouses with aid supplies.
A humanitarian ceasefire is urgently needed: https://t.co/nOCG7aiFw3
It's been confirmed that 53 of our colleagues in📍#Gaza have been killed since October 7
These people dedicated their lives to their communities. One colleague died collecting bread. He leaves behind 6 children.
We are beyond devastated, as this unspeakable suffering continues.
I repeat my call for a humanitarian ceasefire in the Middle East, the unconditional release of all hostages, and the delivery of life-saving supplies at the scale needed.
Everyone must assume their responsibilities.
This is a moment of truth.
History will judge us all.
