Who invented Chess?

One of the most famous stories associated with the invention of Chess is the legend of a wise man named Sissa ibn Dahir;

According to the tale, Sissa created the game to teach a king lessons about strategy, foresight, and the importance of every member of society…

Impressed with this invention, the king offered Sissa any reward he desired.

Instead of asking for gold, land or titles, Sissa make a seemingly modest request:

1 grain of wheat on the first square of the chessboard,
2 grains on the second square,

and continue to double the amount on each of the 64 squares.

The king quickly agreed, believing the reward to be trivial…

However, as the grains doubled from square to square, the total grew at an astonishing rate. By the final square, the number of grains required was beyond anything the kingdom could provide.
