Why are there unusual seismic and volcanic activities around Aceh in Indonesia? A new #EOSsg study helps us better understand how regional tectonics are responsible for these unusual activities. #InVEST_EOS https://t.co/VKXseuH9Kf
More years ago than I care to admit, we installed a seismic network in Bangladesh. We mostly wanted to detect earthquakes - but we saw a ton of other stuff in the "noise":
The monsoon
Holidays
COVID lockdowns

Lujia Feng (who will soon be Asst Prof at @ntu_ase! 🥳🥳) is looking for an enthusiastic PhD student to work on the 3D tectonic kinematics of Southeast Asia as part of the #InVEST_EOS project. If interested, contact Lujia ([email protected]) https://t.co/fiHoAK7CCM
New PhD opportunity in environmental geophysics: Use geophysics too monitor peatland restoration. Industry support from @SmartsoloInc . Fieldwork in Ireland and Scotland. Work with @seismo_amy, Ray Flynn, @seismodave and me. @abdngeology@GeosciencesEd
🚨 Funded PhD opportunity with @QUADRATdtp to use geophysical methods to monitor peatlands! If you're keen to spend time in the field in Ireland and use geophysics to tackle environmental problems, then apply! Happy to chat informally about the project and application process!
Competitively funded PhD projects now available at the University of Edinburgh @GeosciencesEd@e3dtp for Oct 2024, including two with me:
Resolving the structure and nature of the Highland Boundary Fault through high-resolution geophysical investigations https://t.co/Mpj3sW4jT4
Applicants will find support via the E4 Applicant Support Webpages https://t.co/tWVuhCHk6I with online information sessions TOMORROW 15th November 11:30-12:30 (GMT) and 30 November 2023
So why this part of the megathrust only? Changes in the structure of the forearc might be the reason, but more work is needed, particularly if we want to understand how big earthquakes and tsunamis in this area could be.
An intriguing set of doublet earthquakes occurred 2 years ago in the remote Kermadec subduction zone, in an anomalous area of persistent seismicity, that had very similar earthquakes ~50 years before. We dug into these events in a new paper...

Intriguingly this high seismicity zone is co-located with an isolated sedimentary basin. If the formation of the basin is linked with seismogenesis, this indicates that large earthquakes have been persistent at this section of the megathrust for Myrs…
Medical staff in #Gaza are so inundated by the sheer mass of patients arriving that the surgical board used to keep track of the weeks upcoming surgeries has been wiped clean and replaced with these words:
Only month 2 of my PhD with @e3dtp at @GeosciencesEd and I'm helping uninstall a seismic array along the Alpine Fault in the Southern Alps, NZ 🇳🇿... the first part of my amazing geophysical journey, "Edinburgh to the Alpine Fault", is online now: https://t.co/qlZzkb4DgM
