Twitter account of the lab of Karsten Weis @ETH_en. We do exciting research on the mechanism and the regulation of intracellular transport and organization.
Upon stress, how do cells downregulate translation of pre-existing, pro-growth mRNAs while allowing translation of new, stress-induced mRNAs? We now show that translation is controlled by a sequence-independent, timing-controlled mechanism. (1/5)

The @dallandrummond lab used orthogonal methods to reach similar conclusions in their recent paper https://t.co/fsXWaWAhhR. We appreciated the fruitful and open discussion of results prior to publication!

The preferential translation of newly synthesized mRNA permits an elegant coordination between RNA and protein production in eukaryotes when rapid and widescale changes in gene expression are needed. (5/5)
Our commitment to #sustainability has earned our lab a gold 🥇 certification in the @LEAFinLabs program! We've implemented measures to save plastic, water, energy, and more 🌍💚 Sign your lab up today: https://t.co/sdX6HCeRQd

Exciting update!
Starting December 2, 2023, all ASCB member submissions to MBoC are ensured a thorough peer review. Simply ensure the corresponding author is an ASCB member to qualify.
We were happy to participate in the #NationalerZukunftstag. Together with the kids we collected samples from nature and explored them under their self-build fold microscope.
Just in case anyone ever had doubts: Biological science is fun! 330 kids between 10 and 13 years of age visited ETH Zurich today for the nationwide "Future Day 2023", and 47 of these were hosted in the D-BIOL to carry out experiments in our labs.
We embraced our inner gods and goddesses at the institute happy hour! Donning majestic attire, we channeled the spirit of ancient Greece on Friday.

Our Matthias Wojtynek finished 15th in @transconrace, one of the world’s toughest ultra-cycling races. He covered the almost 4000 km from Belgium to Greece in 10 days and 16 hours. What an amazing accomplishment! Congratulations Matthias, we are very proud of you! #TCRNo9
🎉 Exciting news! The @kutay_lab just emerged victorious in the IBC internal #BikeToWork challenge 🚴♂️! Congrats to their team “Why are we doing this again?” for achieving an impressive 88% BikeToWork days! 🎊 #Sustainibility#Teamwork
3 wonderful days at #IBCRetreat2023@ETH_DBIOL
Great line of invited keynote speakers @_taktas_@Dey_Gautam and @BerndPulverer, talks and posters from PhDs & postdocs, scientific discussions and team building.
Thanks to the organizers and all participants for successful event.
Scientists at @ETH_en, join us for a seminar with @GreenLabGuy Martin Farley this Thursday 1st June to learn about implementing the LEAF programme in your lab! Time for discussion and a light apéro included! Sign up for the apero by email to [email protected] 🌱🙏#sustainablelabs
