In any case, the love for the "anointed", particularly in US academia, must be one of the greatest waste of resources. It's surpassing to me but self reproduction is a strong motivator for continuing an inefficient system, I guess.

Someone who has proven they can produce on their own without their academic advisor, make it in a new environment on a postdoc or similar, proven teaching, is in my book more valuable then a fresh graduate who may or may not be successful for tenure.
