Dear Nigerians, here's another question that deserves our collective attention.

The 2026 FG Budget earmarks N22.15 billion for the construction of 106 Palace buildings, with some including furniture and solar installations.

Our review raises serious accountability concerns:
📍 11 Palace projects worth N5.85 billion have no identified locations, making public oversight almost impossible.
📍 None of the 45 implementing MDAs has the statutory mandate to construct palaces.

Among the agencies budgeted to execute these projects are:
• Nigerian Building and Road Research Institute (N3.92bn)
• Federal Cooperative College, Ibadan (N3.29bn)
• Sheda Science and Technology Complex (N1.54bn)
• National Cereals Research Institute (N427m)
• Industrial Arbitration Panel (N369.4m)
• National Oil Spill Detection and Response Agency (N280m)
• Federal Neuro Psychiatric Hospital, Dawanau (N42m)

At a time of rising debt and limited fiscal space, should the Federal Government fund projects that are largely local in nature, while states and local governments constitutionally exist to address many community-level needs?

This is not about the importance of our traditional institutions. It is about ensuring that public budgets reflect constitutional responsibilities, institutional mandates, and Nigeria's development priorities.

The Federal Budget should not become a vehicle for financing projects outside the constitutional and statutory responsibilities of the institutions implementing them.

Nigeria deserves a budget that is lawful, transparent, and development-driven.

We are writing with heavy hearts to cry out for help.

42 children from Mussa Primary and Junior Secondary School, Askira Uba LGA, Borno State were abducted on May 15, 2026. The children include toddlers as young as 2 years old.

Today marks 67 days and our children are still being held in the forests. We have not heard anything about their whereabouts or condition.

We have waited, we have prayed, and we have reported. But up to today, we have not seen concrete action from the Borno State Government under Governor Babagana Zulum to secure their release and bring them home safely.

Our children are in the forest. They are scared, hungry, and in danger. Every day that passes puts their lives at more risk.

We are pleading:

1. Governor Zulum: Please act now. Deploy all necessary resources for the immediate rescue of the 42 Mussa children.
2. Security agencies: We need a coordinated rescue operation urgently.
3. The public and media: Help us amplify this. Do not let our children be forgotten.

We are parents, we are a community, and we are desperate. We cannot do this alone.

Please, help us call on the authorities to act before it is too late. Our children deserve to come home.

CAN A SOLDIER PUNISH YOU FOR WEARING MILITARY CAMOUFLAGE? The Law Says Otherwise.

A common misconception in Nigeria is that military personnel possess the legal authority to summarily punish civilians found wearing Army uniforms or camouflage. In law, that proposition is fundamentally flawed.

The authority to criminalize certain conduct emanates from legislation enacted by the National Assembly, not from the Armed Forces acting on their own discretion.

Under Section 110 of the Criminal Code Act, applicable in Southern Nigeria, any person who is not a member of the Armed Forces and who wears military uniform or any attire resembling such uniform with the intention of deceiving the public commits an offence punishable by law.

Similarly, Section 132 of the Penal Code, applicable in Northern Nigeria, criminalizes the unauthorized wearing of military uniforms where there exists an intention to mislead or impersonate military personnel.

Furthermore, Section 81 of the Armed Forces Act prohibits the unlawful use of military uniforms without proper authorization. However, liability under these provisions is not automatic; the circumstances surrounding the use of the uniform must be subjected to lawful investigation and judicial determination.

A critical element running through these statutory provisions is the intent to deceive. The mere wearing of camouflage clothing, costume attire, or military-inspired fashion does not, without more, establish criminal culpability. The prosecution must demonstrate that the attire was used to impersonate, mislead, or falsely present oneself as a member of the Armed Forces.

Consequently, soldiers do not possess the legal authority to assault, humiliate, publicly strip, torture, or impose instant punishment on civilians merely because they are found wearing military apparel. Such conduct is inconsistent with the rule of law and may itself constitute a violation of constitutionally guaranteed rights.

Where a civilian is reasonably suspected of unlawful impersonation, the appropriate course is arrest in accordance with the law and subsequent handover to the relevant law enforcement authorities for investigation and prosecution. The determination of guilt remains the exclusive preserve of a competent court.

These legal provisions exist primarily to safeguard public security and prevent crimes such as impersonation, kidnapping, armed robbery, and other offences perpetrated by individuals masquerading as military personnel.

The rule of law demands that punishment follows due process, not public humiliation.
