The Nazi guards never heard the baby crying inside her toolbox. If they had, 2,500 children would have died.

In 1942, a 32-year-old Polish social worker named Irena Sendler walked into the Warsaw Ghetto carrying a simple toolbox. She had a permit to check for typhus outbreaks. The guards waved her through. Hidden beneath the wrenches and rags was a six-month-old baby. She walked past armed soldiers and handed the child to a Polish family waiting outside the walls. The next morning she walked back in and did it again.

For three years Irena smuggled approximately 2,500 Jewish children out of the Warsaw Ghetto. She hid infants in toolboxes, sedated children and smuggled them in coffins, concealed them in ambulances under stretchers, and used sewer pipes. Every child received a new Polish name. Irena recorded everything—real names, new names, locations—on tissue paper sealed in glass jars and buried in a friend’s garden.

By October 1943 the Gestapo caught her. They tortured her, broke both her legs and both her feet, and beat her unconscious. She gave them nothing. After months they sentenced her to death. The night before her execution, the underground bribed a guard. He led her out and recorded her as “executed.”

She went immediately back to work and continued until the war ended. When the war ended she dug up the jars and spent months trying to reunite children with families. Most parents had died in the camps.

For decades almost no one knew about her. Then in 1999 four teenage girls in Kansas found a brief mention of a woman who had saved 2,500 children. They researched and wrote a play. At age 89 Irena Sendler became famous. She was honored by Pope John Paul II and nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. She died in 2008 at age 98.

One estimate suggests those 2,500 rescued children produced approximately 6,000 descendants. She was a social worker with a permit and a toolbox. She walked into hell every day for three years and walked out carrying children. The Nazis broke her legs. They couldn’t break her will.

Researchers studied 37,643 children and found that every additional month of full breastfeeding was associated with fewer ADHD symptoms at ages 3, 5, and 8. Even after accounting for ADHD genetic risk in the mother, father, and child, the association remained. They even compared siblings and found similar results.

Warfare is offensive and defensive at the same time. A surplus in one kind of weapon does not compensate for a shortage in another. Respecting the kinds of offensive weapons Iran is deploying against the US and its Gulf allies, the shortage of Patriot interceptors is deemed CRITICAL for a reason.

No, Elon ... for freedom. Freedom is something about which you speak endlessly but, apparently, you're really only talking about your own.

While I'm generally supportive of Elon's endeavors, I find his stance on Ukraine utterly perplexing. If Putin's imperial ambitions are rewarded it will set a precedent and Wars of Conquest will be back on the table (made illegal following WWII). If Elon really wants to bring the Russo-Ukraine war to an end quickly (which I believe he does) he should support the expeditious defeat of the party causing it ... Russia.

In the affairs of man, blame matters ... and expecting the blameless to pay a price so that the blameworthy pay nothing is the de facto acceptance of tyranny.

What's wrong with Ukraine joining NATO? It's a defensive alliance meaning that Article 5 is only triggered if a member is attacked, not if its attacking. Hence, it never represented any threat to Russia. Moreover, Russia possesses the world's largest stockpile of nuclear weapons ... it stretches credulity to suggest that anyone in the Kremlin was worried about being invaded. Putin hates NATO not because it threatened Russia but because it prevents him from threatening others.

In the 1990s, Ukraine gave up the world's third largest stockpile of nuclear weapons in exchange for security guarantees from the world's foremost military powers, including Russia. Russia violated its commitment, Western guarantors (your "third parties") have not.

What about Ukraine's national interests? It wants to be part of EU to improve its economy and part of NATO to improve its security, both core national interests. The Age of Empire is over no matter how much Putin, Xi ... and Trump ... would like to bring it back
