Swiss authorities have confirmed a case of #hantavirus identified in a passenger from the MV Hondius cruise ship.

He had responded to an email from the ship’s operator informing the passengers of the health event, and presented himself to a hospital in Zurich, Switzerland, and is receiving care.

In line with the International Health Regulations (IHR), WHO is working with relevant countries to support international contact tracing, to ensure that those potentially exposed are monitored and that any further disease spread is limited.

The type of virus in this outbreak has been confirmed as Andes hantavirus by the National Institute for Communicable Diseases @nicd_sa, South Africa and the Geneva University Hospitals @hug_ge, Switzerland
The support of the Institut Pasteur de Dakar @PasteurDakar, Senegal and the Administración Nacional de Laboratorios e Institutos de Salud @ANLIS_Malbran, Argentina has also been critical in responding to this event.

As of 6 May, there are 8 cases, 3 of whom are confirmed as hantavirus by laboratory testing.

„Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren, geschätzte Überlebende,

wenn ich heute durch das Tor von Buchenwald gehe, dann tue ich das nicht als öffentliche Person, sondern als Enkel eines Überlebenden. Ich gehe den Weg, den mein Großvater, Hermann Kerkeling, ab dem 2. Juli 1942 gehen musste. Er war kein Mann der großen Worte, aber ein Mann der Tat. Ein Zimmermann aus Recklinghausen, der zupacken konnte, der Strukturen schuf, der mit seinen Händen arbeitete. Er war ein Mensch, der schlichtweg nicht bereit war, wegzusehen, als die Dunkelheit über Deutschland hereinbrach.

Doch am 2. Juli 1942 wurde er zur Nummer 6177. Ein sogenannter „politischer Häftling“. In den Augen des faschistischen Apparats war er ein „Hochverräter“. Hier wurde er gefoltert, gedemütigt und wurde Zeuge unzähliger Morde. Dass er diesen Wahnsinn überlebt hat, ist ein Wunder.

Für mich steht sein „Hochverrat“ heute als das höchste Zeugnis von Treue zur Menschlichkeit.

Mein Opa Hermann hatte unmittelbar nach der Machtergreifung im Jahre 1933 Flugblätter gegen Hitler verteilt. Er hat nicht geschossen, er hat nicht sabotiert – er hat lediglich die Wahrheit geschrieben, gedruckt und verteilt. Das kostete ihn zwölf Jahre seines Lebens. Zwölf Jahre! Denken Sie kurz darüber nach: Was haben Sie in den letzten zwölf Jahren getan? Sie haben Kinder großgezogen, Karrieren verfolgt, geliebt, gelebt. Hermann saß in Haft, zunächst in der sogenannten „Hölle von Recklinghausen“, in diversen Zuchthäusern und schließlich hier, auf dem Ettersberg.

Mein Großvater musste hier in der Effektenkammer seine Zwangsarbeit verrichten. Im Maschinenraum der Entmenschlichung. Er musste den Raub an seinen Mitmenschen verwalten. Uhr, Ehering, Brille, Brosche, Gebiss – alles wurde registriert, als handele es sich um bloße Lagerware.

Hier liegt eine der bittersten historischen Lehren: Die Barbarei beginnt nicht mit dem ersten Schuss; sie beginnt dort, wo Menschen nur noch Nummern in einer Statistik sind, wo das Mitgefühl der Buchhaltung weicht und das Gewissen der sinnentleerten Gehorsamspflicht.

Als mein Großvater hier heute vor 81 Jahren, 1945, befreit wurde, war er 44 Jahre alt. Körperlich ein gebrochener Mann, geplagt von Krankheiten, die ihn nie wieder verlassen sollten; von einer tiefen Müdigkeit, die keine Nachtruhe der Welt heilen konnte. Eine echte Wiedergutmachung hat er nie erhalten; man hat ihn nach dem Krieg mit ein paar Mark abgespeist. Und das Bitterste: Die Aufhebung seines Unrechtsurteils wegen „Hochverrats“ hat es zu seinen Lebzeiten nie gegeben. In den Augen der Bürokratie blieb der Verfolgte ein Vorbestrafter.

Aber das Schwerste für uns als Familie war sein bleiernes Schweigen. Dieses dröhnende Schweigen war wie eine Mauer aus Glas, die seine Seele umgab. Wir – seine Familie – konnten ihn sehen, aber wir konnten ihn nur selten erreichen. Vielleicht wollte er uns schützen? Er wollte nicht, dass die grausame Kälte und der blinde Hass dieses Ortes in unsere warme Wohnstube in Recklinghausen kriecht.

Viele der Überlebenden der Nazi-Diktatur haben für sich den Weg des Schweigens gewählt. Das mag uns Erben eine Ahnung vom Horror des Durchlebten geben. Es war und ist unbeschreiblich und unsagbar.

Wir, die Bürger der Bundesrepublik Deutschland, tragen keine Schuld an den Taten von damals. Aber wir tragen die Verantwortung für die Konsequenzen dieser Taten im Hier und Jetzt.

So etwas wie eine „Gnade der späten Geburt“ gibt es nicht, es gibt nur die Pflicht der späten Erkenntnis. Wer heute behauptet, die Geschichte des Faschismus in Deutschland sei ein abgeschlossenes Kapitel, der hat nicht verstanden, dass die bösen Geister von damals nicht in den Ruinen von Buchenwald geblieben sind. Sie warten darauf, in verunglimpfender Sprache, bösartiger Hetze, im dumpfen Ressentiment und in der alltäglichen Gleichgültigkeit wieder geweckt zu werden. Wer….👇

The war in the Strait of Hormuz will reach your local pharmacy within six weeks. Not because your pharmacist follows geopolitics. Because the active pharmaceutical ingredients in roughly half of America’s generic prescriptions begin as petrochemical derivatives manufactured in India, and India’s petrochemical industry begins as crude oil that transited 21 miles of water that closed on March 4.

Nearly 70 percent of the active ingredients in US generic drugs are produced in India. India imports approximately 40 percent of its crude oil through the Strait of Hormuz. The crude feeds refineries that produce naphtha. The naphtha feeds petrochemical crackers that produce intermediates. The intermediates feed pharmaceutical plants in Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Hyderabad that produce the API, the active pharmaceutical ingredient, that is shipped to contract manufacturers in the United States, Europe, and across Asia. The chain from the strait to the tablet is six steps long. Every step requires the one before it.

CNBC reported that the Hormuz closure puts America’s generic drug supply at risk. Fierce Pharma warned of longer-term effects on US manufacturing and generics. Think Global Health mapped the pharmaceutical supply chains most vulnerable to disruption. The consensus across trade publications, health policy analysts, and industry executives is identical: four to six weeks of current inventory exists in the pipeline. After that, shortages begin with the most complex formulations first.

Cancer drugs are the highest risk. Biologics requiring cold-chain storage have the shortest shelf life and the longest replenishment cycle. Clinical trial medications depend on uninterrupted supply chains that are now interrupted. Insulin analogues, antivirals, and cardiac medications all contain intermediates sourced from Indian manufacturers whose input costs are rising with every day the strait remains closed.

Air cargo is the emergency bypass. But air freight rates from India have climbed 200 to 350 percent on some routes since the war began, according to logistics tracking firms. Gulf air capacity is down 79 percent because airports in the UAE, Kuwait, and Qatar have been damaged or operate under restricted conditions. The Suez Canal route adds 10 to 14 days to maritime shipping times. The Cape of Good Hope route adds 21 to 28 days. Both alternatives assume the Red Sea remains navigable, which the Houthi threat has complicated since 2024.

The World Health Organisation reported a 70 percent funding gap for its operational response in the region. Medical supply chains to Iran itself have been devastated, with hospitals reporting shortages of surgical supplies, blood products, and anaesthetics. But the downstream pharmaceutical effect extends far beyond the war zone. Every Indian manufacturer that pays more for crude pays more for naphtha, pays more for intermediates, and passes the cost forward into API prices that American generic drug companies absorb until they cannot absorb any further.

The molecule does not know it is a medicine. The strait does not know it is a pharmacy. The petrochemical derivative that becomes a blood pressure tablet transits the same water as the petrochemical derivative that becomes a fertiliser pellet. Both are trapped. Both have shelf lives. Both have planting windows or prescription refill cycles that do not negotiate with blockades.

Six weeks. Then the pharmacy starts calling patients about substitutions.
