40 साल पहले आज के ही दिन पूर्व थलसेनाध्यक्ष जनरल अरुण कुमार श्रीधर वैद्य की हत्या कर दी गई थी। खालिस्तानियों ने भारत को ऐसे-ऐसे घाव दिए हैं, जो इस्लामी आतंकी भी नहीं दे सके।

4 खालिस्तानियों ने इस घटना को अंजाम दिया था। उनकी पत्नी भानु वैद्य को भी गोलियाँ लगी थीं। ऐसा नहीं है कि ये अचानक हुआ था। 'ऑपरेशन ब्लू स्टार' में उनकी भूमिका को लेकर उनसे सज़ा देने व उनकी हत्या करने को लेकर धमकी भरे पत्र जारी किए जा चुके थे।

ऑपरेशन के समय वही देश के सेना प्रमुख थे। पुणे के जिस कोरेगाँव पार्क इलाक़े में ये घटना हुई उसे आज भी शहर के सबसे पॉश इलाक़ों में गिना जाता है। उस समय वो कार में थे। गोली सिर और गर्दन में लगी थी। ऊपर से कार भी दुर्घटनाग्रस्त हो गई और एक गड्ढे में जा घुसी थी। सोचिए, ये हमला तब हुआ था जब इन धमकियों के कारण शहर में सतर्कता थी और जनरल वैद्य को सुरक्षा भी उपलब्ध करा दी गई थी।

2 हत्यारों को उसी पुणे के यरवदा जेल में फाँसी हुई। और हाँ, इनकी कट्टरता देखिए कि फाँसी से पहले भी वो पंजाब की 'आज़ादी' के ही नारे लगा रहे थे।
