When the Government of India announced the Padma Shri for Dr. Tapan Kumar Lahiri,
the protocol required him to travel to Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi to receive the honor from the President.

​However, Dr. Lahiri was hesitant to go. His reasoning was simple: "If I go to Delhi, who will look after my patients in the OPD?" For him, a day away from the hospital wasn't a holiday; it was a day his patients—many of whom traveled from Bihar and rural UP—would go untreated.

Finally he did go given the prestige associated with the event.

Who is Dr Tapan Lahiri?

Dr. Tapan Kumar Lahiri is a legendary Indian cardiothoracic surgeon and professor commonly referred to as the "Saint of BHU". Dr. Lahiri has done FRCS and MCh and working in BHU.

​Dr. Lahiri’s commitment to the poor is extraordinary.

In 1994, when his salary (including allowances) exceeded ₹1 lakh, he stopped taking it entirely, directing the university to use the funds for the treatment of underprivileged patients.

After retiring in 2003, he continued this practice with his pension. He keeps only enough to cover two simple meals a day and donates the remainder to the BHU patient fund.

Even in his 80s, he has been known to walk to the hospital at 6:00 AM daily, carrying a simple bag and a black umbrella, to check on his patients.

Reason to go there :

City colleges fees: Rs 1000 to 3000.
Hotel fees : 200 per month.

In SRMV: (25 kms from city)
College fees: 300
Hotel fees : 75 per month.

Reason to travel by train:
I could not afford even that Hostel fees.
I found a Govt Harijan hostel in city which was free.
But bus fare was 60 paise one way. Monthly Rs. 30.
That also sounded too costly.

A passenger train used to run in that route and its student quarterly pass was Rs. 7.

Those days my mother was only earning member of family. Rs. 3 a day. So I had to do all sacrifice to get a degree without denting her arithmetics much. She gave her 4 bangles to pay my college fees.

நான் A2B ரசிகன்/ஆதரவாளன் குறிப்பாக, அவர்களுடைய மதிய உணவு-சாம்பார், ரசம், கூட்டு போன்றவை.

ஆனால், அண்மையில் - கடந்த ஒன்றிரண்டு ஆண்டுகளாக அவர்களுடைய தர அடையாளம் தேய்ந்துகொண்டே வருகிறது.

ரொம்ப நாளாக சொல்ல நினைத்தேன்... ஒரு நல்ல தமிழ்மண் உணர்வுள்ள தொழிலதிபர்... அவர் காதுகளுக்கு எப்படியும் செல்லும், சரிசெய்து விடுவார் எனக் காத்திருந்தேன். அது நிகழாததால், இந்தப் பதிவு.

இது அவர் கவனத்துக்கு வந்து, இதை மீண்டும் உயர்த்தி நிலைக்க வைப்பதுதான் நமக்கும் நல்லது, அவர்க்கும் நல்லது.

இந்தத் தரக்குறைபாடுக்கு காரணம் சமையல்கட்டுக்குள் வட மாநிலத்தவர் அனுமதிக்கப்பட்டதோ என்று நாங்கள் அனுமானிக்கிறோம். அதற்கு சுவைதான் ஆதாரம்.

என்னைப்போன்றவர் A2B உணவை அதிகம் விரும்பியதற்குக் காரணம் அவர்களுடைய சாம்பார். இது சோற்றுக்கு மட்டுமன்றி, இட்லி, தோசை, பொங்கல், வடை, பஜ்ஜி என பல சிற்றுண்டிகளுக்கும் தேவைப்படுகிற ஒன்று என்பதால், இதை வைத்துதான் அந்த நிறுவனத்துக்குப் பெயரே! எந்தத் தமிழ் உணவகத்துக்கும் இதுதான் பொது.

ஆனால், இப்போது கொஞ்சநாட்களாக நீர்த்துப்போன, கொஞ்சம் இனிக்கிற, தமிழ் மணம் அறவே அற்ற ஒரு சாம்பார். கர்நாடகாவிலும், டெல்லியிலும் கிடைக்கிற சாம்பார் போன்றே சுவைக்கிறது. பருப்பின் சுவை குறைந்து, நம் சாம்பார் பொடி மணமும், சுவையும் அறவே மாயமாகிவிட்டது. அதனால் சாம்பார் அவர்கள் கைக்குச் சென்றுவிட்டதோ என்று உறுதியாகச் சந்தேகிக்கிறோம்.

தமிழருக்கு என்ன சுவை பிடிக்கும் என்பது அவனுக்கு எப்படிப் புரியும்?

சற்று நேரம் முன்பு கேசரியும், வெங்காய பஜ்ஜியும் ஆர்டர் செய்தோம். பஜ்ஜிக்குத் தொட்டுக்கொள்ள நாம் எதை முதலில் எதிர்பார்ப்போம்? தேங்காய் சட்னி-கெட்டிச் சட்னிதானே? அது அனுப்பப்படவே இல்லை. தக்காளி சாஸ் அனுப்புகிறான் அவன்.

கேசரியைப் பாருங்கள். கேசரியின் முதல் கவர்ச்சியே அதன் கேசரி நிறம்தானே? பிறகு அதன் மென்மையான, மிருதுவான, நெய் மணக்கும் தன்மை. இவை எதுவுமே அதிலில்லை. சர்க்கரைப் பொங்கல் போல தோற்றமளிக்கும், வறட்சியான ஒரு பண்டமாக வந்திருக்கிறது.

இது நிச்சயம் ஒரு தமிழன் சமைத்ததல்ல என்று நானும், என் மனைவியும் ஆணித்தரமாகச் சொல்கிறோம். அதை உண்ணவே இல்லை. அப்படியே விட்டுவிட்டோம்.

(வீணாக்க மாட்டோம். எதிர்வீட்டில் வட இந்தியக் காவலாளிகள் இருக்கின்றனர். அவர்கள் விரும்பி உண்பார்கள். அவர்கள் பாணி உணவுதானே.)

நம்மூர் பணியாளர்கள் தோசை, வடை, பஜ்ஜி, காப்பி போன்றவற்றைப் பரிமாறும்போது, "மணி என்ன சார்?" "அங்கெல்லாம் மழையா சார்?" "டூட்டி முடியுற டைம் சார். வீட்டுக்குப் போகணும். இன்னிக்கிப் பிள்ளைக்குப் பொறந்த நாள், சார்" என்றெல்லாம் சகஜமாகப் பேசிக்கொண்டே பரிமாறும் அந்த உணவக உறவுகளெல்லாம் கனவாகிப் போய்விட்டதை நினைத்தால் கொஞ்சம் வருத்தம்தான்.

உணவு ருசிப்பது இதுவும் சேர்ந்துதானே.

Several people behave rudely with him, but he still pursues them not to do such things. When asked how he deals with the resistance, he said that he fills bottles with the river water and asks the people to take a sip from it. When they refuse, he makes them aware of the severe pollution in the river.
