@Duncan36040548 I think that a building is, in essence, a thing to define a specific use or meaning, though it might not necessarily fully contain the buildings programs. A building can clearly define a change in space, or blur the transition between spaces. It depends on the architect's motive.

@AutumnPArch329 No, I don't think the lack of funds are the reason the slums stay as they are. Though if the funds were available to only rebuilding the slums, there would might be opposition from the residents of the area and maybe officials.

@AshleighTotten It seems to me like a lot of famous architects try to completely start from scratch, when it could be more beneficial to draw from existing architecture.

@AutumnPArch329 Having a constant value/function in an urban landscape would make the artifacts more cohesive with each other, instead of having them look like completely random things in the built environment.
