No school would ever have a football or basketball team without a coach. The librarian is the literacy coach, general manager, scout, and cheerleader. Isn’t instilling a love of reading in students at least as important as a love of sports?
I also think it is time to stop pretending schools are worried about their student’s reading skills if they do not make a full time certified librarian with a budget and support a priority #ReadingSummit
@PeopleforEd's Annual Report on Schools Libraries shows the importance of school libraries, but also significant inequities across the province. 27% of elementary schools in Northern Ontario don't have a library technician or teacher-librarian https://t.co/KXGkjFlFj9
For rural areas, it's the combination of all cuts, like "..library cuts that will limit interlibrary loans, which restricts the movement of books in rural areas—a good stand-in for the hit to social mobility that comes with cutting off access to information and knowledge."
@libtechninja Thanks for sharing this- we’re tracking as much information as we can on cuts to school libraries across the province, so that we can continue to engage with the Ministry of Ed. If you haven’t already, please share what you can on the impact of these cuts: https://t.co/PiCMpuwWZk
I am so excited that my high school and my elementary schools have jumped on board with this!!! It’s going to be an exciting summer with twist and turns on every page @UCDSB@TagwiWarriors@RoxmorePublic@ucdsbvlc
Update on School Summer Lending/Reading Program- 126 schools in 7 provinces have joined! About 250,000 books going home this summer! In the fall we will provide feedback about number of books, return rate, and qualitative analysis. @kidsbookcentre@CANSCAIP@CdnSchoolLibrar @orca
