The dead puppy named Biggie was described as one of the thinnest ever seen by RSPCA inspector Ben Kirby.
Inspector Kirby went to a property in Dock Tavern Road on November 28, 2023 after police officers had forced entry and found the nine-month-old puppy dead inside.
In his witness statement, inspector Kirby said: “I could see small dog excrement littered all over the floors amongst piles of rubbish, children’s toys and personal effects.
“Lying on the floor between one sofa and the table was the emaciated body of a Cane Corso puppy.
"He was lying as though he’d fallen asleep, on his front with his head resting on the floor between his front paws."
Inspector Kirby found no food or water sources available in the home, "just empty bowls and torn packaging".
The veterinary report added that Biggie "would have experienced fear and distress as he slowly starved to death" especially as he was left on his own, and that he had been confined to the home on his own for a long time, while suffering from the "pangs of hunger and thirst".
Jackson was sentenced to 15 weeks in prison, suspended for 12 months, and was ordered to undertake mental health treatment.
Sherwood was sentenced to 20 weeks in prison, suspended for 12 months, and was ordered to complete 250 hours of unpaid work.
The pair were ordered to each pay a £154 victim surcharge and were disqualified from keeping all animals.
