Moved to #Abuja on the 10th of Jan. 2021 and immediately fell in love with the city. I made amazing friends here, fell in love, lost my love, fell in love again, lost it again, and found it a final time.

Of all the cities around the world that I’ve been privileged to visit, nowhere equally excites me and nurtures me as much as Abuja.

For the purpose of chasing a big goal, I’ve officially left Abuja for a bit. Nairobi will be home for a while. I hope my time in Nairobi is just as beautiful and I hope to learn from our siblings in the East. I hope to thrive here and experience as much as I possibly can in this new city.

I interviewed candidates for Shell for years. One common problem had nothing to do with intelligence.

People answered the question they prepared, not the question they were asked.

You ask about a conflict. They give a speech about leadership. You ask what they personally did. They keep saying 'we.' You ask for the result. They start another story.

Preparation is good. Rehearsal is good. But an interview is still a conversation. Listen to the exact question. Take a second. Choose one relevant example. Explain your action and the result.

A polished answer to the wrong question is still the wrong answer.

He said something in the lines of—

"Please, young people, don't lead with money. Lead with things like conversation, like connection, like presence, like compliment.

And it makes absolute sense.

Mr Hamzat’s administration has delivered slightly over 10,000 units of housing since it got into office in 2019.

If they meet their own “ambitious target”, they would complete about 14,000 units by the end of their tenure.

That is an average of 1,750 units per year. Shocking. Shameful even.

If you consider that well over 40% of these units were delivered in PPP arrangements that aren’t necessarily affordable, you’d realize how embarrassing their housing policy has been.

It gets even more worrying when you juxtapose this abysmal failure with the fact that since 2023, rents have surged by more than 200%, while the minimum wage, the fastest-rising income floor in the economy, has grown by only 133%.

Unfortunately, rents are still climbing at roughly 15% year-on-year, with a further 10–18% rise forecast through 2026.

This unfortunate and relentless squeeze is pushing the majority of working people outside the formal housing market, such that around 60% of Lagosians now live in informal settlements.

Mr Hamzat and his colleagues in the APC have been culpable. They have no ideas beyond a rentier economic system that prioritizes access over equity.
