Gutted to hear that we lost Howie Klein.

Howie was one of the few that put morality above political connections. He always took time to help progressive candidates, offering advice, support and solidarity.

Beyond that, his anecdotes and humor were top notch. I’ll forever cherish our 5 minute calls that turned into hours and will be forever grateful for his support while running for office and afterward. I was lucky to know him.

I’ll always fight for better because I love our city.

Born into St. James Town, it’s surreal to be included on @torontolife’s list of the 50 most influential.

I think back to where this started for my parents from Iran, and to everything I’ve seen since — how poverty, policy, and prejudice shape who gets care and who goes without. The people I’ve met in shelters, clinics, and classrooms have shaped my work more than anything else.

Any recognition belongs to them, and to the colleagues, mentors, and community partners who show every day that health is driven inside and outside of hospital walls.

I’m grateful to everyone who’s been part of this work — those before and those who have long believed and refuse to give up. There’s still a long way to go together.

The goal remains the same: make health and dignity possible for everyone no matter where you live.
