Canada’s inflation rate ticked up to 3.1% in September.

At first glance, that doesn’t sound great. But gasoline prices were up 27.8%. Take gasoline out, and inflation cooled to 2.2%.

Another reminder that one headline number rarely tells the whole story.

It followed failures to report $5B+ in suspicious transactions.
