As things stand now, the regime is likely to survive. Its tolerance for the pain inflicted by the blockade is greater than the US media’s tolerance for higher gas prices (though President Trump’s tolerance may be higher).

3 options for next steps:

1) Stay the course a little longer, inflict maximum economic damage to the regime, weaken it as much as possible, claim victory—it will certainly be a military victory—but recognize we’ll always have to be ready to come back to ensure the regime doesn’t regenerate its nuclear program and deal with its inevitable terrorism.

2) Keep the blockade + restart a military operation to definitively destroy the regime’s ability to regenerate its nuclear program—or delay it by decades (this will require putting boots on the ground to at least remove the “nuclear dust”). This approach will likely mean we’ll have to come back from time to time.

3) Option 2 + restart the targeting of the regime’s top (and local) leaders, degrade their repression capabilities as much as possible, while arming the population, with the clear objective of toppling the regime.

Only Option 3—definitely the riskiest—can lead to the change of leadership in Iran that’ll ensure we don’t always have to look over our shoulder. Who knows?Maybe we’ll even end up with @PahlaviReza, who’ll usher in a democracy that likes America.

The fastest way to end the war with Iran is to actually defeat the regime or make a deal that doesn't defeat the regime but attempts to contain it.  The truth is that it cannot be permanently contained for several reasons, including that if a Democrat becomes president, or even an isolationist or establishment Republican, the necessary military force will not be used to ensure compliance because the regime itself is fundamentally and ultimately incapable of honoring a deal given its fundamentalist Islamist ideology.  Also, the public will tire of it over a course of years (a forever war) and there will be other enemies that will require some form of attention, thereby requiring our military resources to also deal with them in some form -- perhaps an even bigger foe, like Red China.

To defeat the regime requires: 1. continued military operations aimed at obliterating the IRGC and perhaps key dual use infrastructure; 2. continued maximum economic pressure, especially continuation of the blockade; AND 3. arming the people in Iran, a very important and necessary resource (we've done this before during the Reagan administration and I presume the CIA is still up to the task).  

The president will be criticized regardless of how he proceeds, as the Democrats and their media are rooting for the enemy and hope to gain advantage in the midterms.  So, they must be ignored.  But a real victory will not only ensure our security from a nuclear-obsessed terrorist regime beyond the Trump presidency (as it won't exist any longer), but the American people will ultimately praise it as victory has a way of focusing the mind and the heart (which should have political benefits as well).  I am concerned that waiting for the enemy to come forward with some kind of an offer, which might be framed as a victory, could be problematic.

I must caution, however, as I have before, that I am not privy to all the information.  And I also underscore that President Trump is never to be underestimated.  He is a truly gutsy and great leader.  Indeed, he has done more than all previous seven presidents who preceded him combined to deal with the Iranian regime's grave threat.  And for this alone he will be remembered long after most of us are gone.

100 days ago, on January 8th and 9th, millions of Iranians took to the streets knowing the price they might pay. More than 40,000 heroes paid that price for Iran's dignity, liberty, and freedom.

Young women tore off their headscarves in front of armed security forces. Students organized, marched, and faced plainclothes agents on campuses. Teachers, lawyers, and workers walked off their jobs. Shopkeepers shuttered their stores in solidarity. Millions of ordinary people did extraordinary things in city after city in an epic display of national unity.

The regime answered with bullets, mass arrests, and show trials and executions. Facing an inhuman evil, Iranians showed superhuman bravery. More than 40,000 gave their lives.

My compatriots kept going and their courage belongs to history. This is the final battle and they are preparing to win the war against the Islamic Republic. In this battle to reclaim our nation, I will not stop fighting until the day they are free.
