Give me a break. The finale was all exposition. The last decade of Hal was being locked up, being hated and then getting shot in the head. John decides to let Hal's killer go because..why did he do that again?

The finale is being hated because the writing is terrible. And I say that as one of the biggest cheerleaders of the show for the first seven.
