The San Bernardino County Fire Protection District is deeply saddened by the tragic air ambulance incident Wednesday night involving a REACH Air Medical Services helicopter that went down shortly after takeoff from Catalina Island while transporting a patient to the mainland. Among those who tragically lost their lives was Flight RN Jessica DeVries, a former member of the San Bernardino County Fire Protection District and someone who remained deeply connected to our County Fire family.
Our hearts are heavy, and Jessica’s loss is deeply felt throughout our organization, especially by those who had the privilege of working alongside her and calling her a friend.
During her time with our Fire District, Jessica served as both an EMS Flight Nurse and EMS Nurse Educator. She dedicated herself to caring for others and made a lasting impression on her coworkers, students, patients, and so many others throughout our organization. Her service, compassion, and the impact she made will not be forgotten.
We mourn alongside and extend our support to the entire REACH Air Medical Services family during this incredibly difficult time. We also mourn all those who lost their lives in this tragedy and extend our deepest sympathies to their families, friends, colleagues, and everyone affected by this incident. We also keep those who were injured in our thoughts and hope for their full and speedy recovery.
We are grateful to the public safety agencies and personnel who responded and worked under extraordinarily difficult circumstances.
Our thoughts remain with Jessica’s family, the families of all those lost, those recovering from their injuries, the REACH Air Medical Services family, and everyone impacted by this tragedy.
I visited the Montgomery County ICE Processing Center to check on our constituent, Mr. Arias Trejo, and push for the medical care he needs.
Congress has a duty to conduct real oversight of ICE, demand answers, and make sure people in detention are treated humanely. ICE cannot be allowed to police itself.
A 22-year-old needed his inhaler. He needed his rent money more. He didn't survive the choice.
Cole Schmidtknecht walked into a pharmacy on January 10, 2024, expecting to pay $35 to $66 under his insurance. The bill came to $539.19. His daily preventative inhaler wasn't covered anymore.
He earned $19 an hour. Rent was coming.
Five days later, on January 15, a severe asthma attack sent him into cardiac arrest. He was taken off life support on January 21.
His parents have filed a federal lawsuit alleging nobody gave adequate notice of the coverage change or offered an affordable alternative.
He wasn't careless. He just did the math.
Every time your phone tells you where you are, it is using a mathematical model of the shape of the Earth.
A Black woman from rural Virginia spent decades building that model by hand, and almost nobody knew her name until she was in her eighties.
Gladys West. She grew up in a sharecropping family in Dinwiddie County and understood early that the alternatives were the tobacco fields or the factory. She finished top of her high school class, which came with a scholarship, and took it.
Her work was satellite geodesy: taking the raw data coming down from orbit and using it to compute, correction by correction, the true irregular shape of the Earth. Not a sphere. Not even a neat ellipsoid. A lumpy thing with gravitational highs and lows.
That model is the foundation the Global Positioning System sits on. You cannot locate a point on a surface until you know precisely what the surface is.
She did this for decades, largely unremarked, and retired in 1998.
She was recognised in 2018, when her sorority mentioned her biography at a function and someone realised what was in it.
The Air Force inducted her into its Space and Missile Pioneers Hall of Fame. She earned a PhD in her seventies.

ICE arrested the mom of a 9-year-old at a school bus stop in Austin, leaving him alone and crying. The video has profanity and is heartbreaking to watch, but it shows the fear/pain of what happened.
This is evil. This is wrong. And it has to stop.

Unaccompanied minors — immigrant children as young as two years old — are being brought before an immigration judge and expected to adequately represent themselves.
This year, the Trump administration allowed a contract with the Acacia Center for Justice to lapse, leaving a vacuum where the center once provided legal counsel to over 20,000 kids.
In addition to being plainly negligent, these children are being denied due process under the Constitution of the United States of America. I have been a voice on this issue for as long as I have served in Congress, but recent events have shown unprecedented levels of cruelty by this administration that must stop once and for all.
