@thisiszhane I respect that, and agree with you there. I am saying from my personal experiences, in my special education courses, I have not seen any negative stereotypes occur.

@drbreebree @Okaikor True! In my special education graduate courses at Montclair State University, I haven't noticed anything. Undergraduate in math and computer science, yes, but those weren't teacher prep courses.

@oJaison Hi Jaison,
That is great that you are getting involved in special education! I agree with what you've written as well, and hope we can change that. My mom has taught autism in an urban environment for 23 years and I hope to follow in her foot steps :).

@eimayorga@Okaikor A co-conspirator understands their privilege and the disadvantages or advantages a group has based on societal structure. An ally doesn't always understand their own privilege or understand the full extent of what the group they're supporting is going through.

@tenayteaches@Okaikor Hi Makayla. The teacher misjudged you and should have included more culturally relevant learning, asked you if you were okay, and what he or she could do to improve his or her teaching methods. Sorry that you went through that.

@drbreebree @Okaikor Caucasian individuals who do not experience this may stick with the color blind philosophy. Being the majority, they may not even understand their white privilege. They may also experience white fragility, getting defensive, if told something they do is racist.

@Okaikor While I was student observing in NEEC in Newark NJ, I saw that the teacher used student's strengths and the community in her work (word problems discussing the community of Newark NJ). I really admired the teacher, and came kept coming back to learn more!

@Okaikor Being jewish, the same teacher gave very prejudice remarks. It created a toxic environment and made me dislike coming into school. I thought: how could an authority figure do this?
#morethansurvive
@drbreebree @Okaikor When hearing from an authority figure racist and prejudice remarks, sometimes it makes you feel inferior. It makes you think that you are in a powerless situation and toxic environment. And it makes you question is this what the rest of the world is like?

@Okaikor Being jewish, that same teacher made some pretty prejudice remarks. I did not feel comfortable in that classroom and it created a toxic learning environment.
@Okaikor A1: I had a teacher in the past that stereotyped specific students based on their race or ethnic background. It was pretty depressing to see and must have had some long term effects on the victims of it.

@drbreebree Hello, my name is Jason and I am from Montclair State University. I am here to discuss more about abolition teaching. Thank you.
