we don’t talk enough about the damage hotd writers inflicted on how people view the bond between dragons and riders. once a dragon is claimed, it won’t act against its bonded rider’s wishes. i completely understand why grrm distanced himself from this adaptation.
However Rhaena doesn’t need to be a dragon rider to serve her family.. Rhaena is the feminine picture perfect princess that wins every damn lord of the east. Her nature is why she is chosen as Aegon’s heir over Baela…we definitely can’t say that after Gullet
‘House of the Dragon’ showrunner Ryan Condal on why Rhaenyra's youngest children Aegon and Viserys was left out of the Battle of the Gullet episode
“Her youngest children are just not of an age where you can involve them with complex dramatic sequences, complex action. It's not safe, it's not practical. So it was just something that we had to dispense of rather early on in the process.”

but Nettles' storyline fundamentally does not WORK if she is part of the family because it is the story of a poor outsider teenager who finds herself (through merit, most likely) amongst the Targaryens
the storyline cannot work for Rhaena because she is a princess... sigh
Sadly, it’s been too late since they changed Rhaenyra and Alicent’s ages. I’ll never understand why we can’t just have a straight adaptation. No one cares about someone else interpretation
#HouseOfTheDragon Showrunner Ryan Condal explains why Rhaena took over the storyline originally held by Nettles in the source material. 🐉
“It just felt to us that because again, this story is told in point of view, that it felt more apt as this is a family story to where we had the opportunity to involve one of the family members in the storyline.
And because Rhaena has been set up since season 1 as the member of this family wdoesn’t have a dragon and basically her sole identity is the Targaryen kid wdoesn’t have a dragon, it felt like that was a character that we had already set this long runway for that it could be very satisfying for the TV audience that didn’t have an experience with the book at all to see that character claim a dragon and then in a very, I think, Game of Thrones and Westerosian kind of way, to reap the consequences of having her wish come true. It’s a very monkey’s paw kind of moment for Rhaena. She gets her great wish and it becomes her greatest nightmare.”

There’s a lot of frustration with HOTD and a lot of it rightfully so, but please don’t start being weird to the actors. They’re doing their best to entertain us doing a great job at it. Don’t be a jerk.
