@moorehn Whatever personal definition anyone has about what makes a "real" New Yorker will never stop people from moving to/staying in NYC. What will this discourse even accomplish? Sufficiently shame people into changing their minds about moving? Convince transplants to move out??
@river_is_nice Like any other experience, it depends on the person. An intelligent, observant person can find ways to learn new things, have new insights, from anything. Only vapid, incurious people see nothing to learn.
@NBACouchside Love him but he also has a stutter thing he does in everything that I can't stop noticing that feels like his crutch to hide his real accent the similar way male Brits make their voice go raspy/gravelly to hide theirs.
This is really stupid, and it’s not getting enough attention.
The Trump administration is pulling a working $368 million ocean monitoring system out of the water, equipment taxpayers already bought, built, and sank into the deep ocean.
And they are doing it right when the oceans are behaving in ways that alarm the scientists who study them.
Record-breaking temperatures.
A system of Atlantic currents that may be lurching toward collapse.
The response?
Yank out the instruments and walk away.
That is not budgeting. That is smashing the gauges while the engine is on fire and calling it efficiency.
For what? The Trump administration dressed it up as a “nimbler approach” and “smart lifecycle management,” which is fancy nonsense for “we shut it off and hoped nobody would ask why.” There is no return-on-investment analysis. They cannot show taxpayers save a dime, because the gear is already paid for and the science it produces protects real money and real lives.
The kicker: the same people killing the monitors want to mine the deep sea for minerals. So they are destroying the only tools that could measure what that mining does. That is not an accident.
That is the point. You cannot see the damage if you break the instruments first.

It’s called INVESTOR FRAUD.
Google is buying GPUs from Nvidia through SpaceX to boost revenue IN ITS OWN INVESTMENT.
Google owns 5% of SpaceX.
It’s more circular bullshit financing to justify an INSANE valuation. These people are just stealing from us.
Existe algum caso de cidade que tenha eliminado ou reduzido espaço para o carro e que não tenha dado certo ou que tenham voltado atrás? Impressionante a teimosia em não reconhecer e aplicar políticas comprovadamente positivas mundo a fora.
This is a bailout without calling it a bailout.
It will goose the IPO, the government can call it an "investment" and all the early investors will dump their shares immediately.
The Americans is one of the four or five best dramas ever to air on TV. The closing scene of the pilot made me a diehard fan. There’s a moment in the series finale I haven’t been able to stop thinking about since I first saw it. Very few shows are written & acted on this level.
There is media bias, just not the kind Republicans have been screaming about for the last 40 years.
266K jobs under Biden? "Job Growth Slowed."
172K jobs under Trump? "Labor Market Upswing Continues."
THE NEW YORK TIMES, LADIES AND GENTLEMEN!
A Collins classic here where she joins Dems in the failed vote to block Trump’s slush fund so she can say she was against it, but when they needed her vote to get it over the top she was there for them.
A coffee shop opening at 10 a.m. feels fundamentally wrong. By 10, I’ve already had coffee, contemplated life, and answered emails. Coffee shops should be open at the crack of dawn. We’re losing the plot.
If you don't want to live in a city, then you may have to accept that travelling in and out of the city is a bit hard, and you can't demand that we demolish parts of the city to allow wide roads and lots of car parking.
