In this blog post, @KudzaiChatiza2 reflects on what “urban” and “development” mean in practice, and how urban development is unfolding in Zimbabwe 👇

Crisis. Complexity. Scarcity.
Markets. Privatisation. Wants.
Abundance. Excess.
Wastefulness. Inequalities.
Manufactured politicisation to manage society and resources for (towards) a few.
How does crisis language steer panicked and unequalising policies & practices?
I urged the student to enjoy the contours of the process with confident integrity, assuring them that a week of untailed field immersion is better than years of ducking and diving from authorities especially those at field level who tend to exaggerate & intimidate
Today, I found myself explaining to a European research student how Zim's multi-level 'clearance' is no different from the 'rigour' Zimbos manoeuvre to get a visa. It's not gatekeeping but simply public administration, research ethics, and safeguarding researcher/participants.
And then?
I hope the paper reported, the driver was apprehended, and the wheels of justice are now in motion
As a national paper (part of a huge media house), you've so much power. If you haven't done it, then WHO?
A pirate commuter omnibus was captured on camera reversing against oncoming traffic along Robert Mugabe Way in Harare CBD on Friday afternoon, posing a danger to other motorists and pedestrians.

...& can create/ruin it. The state (citizens & politicians) picks the ruin, the market barks new demands & the cycle continues
Market politicians seem stronger, less accountable than political reps & servants
Come 2030, the MARKET (in suits) will be there, semi-outside politics
To dollarise or have a mono-currency? The market sponsored a 2030 term limit. State obliged. Now it's sponsoring scrapping the limit. The 'market' wears suits & gathers in meetings to speak, its not invisible, its political, (mis)leads, succeeds & fails. It demands stability
Does this suggest key parts of African cities have rhythms & real-life dynamics not well known, not formally governed, and therefore not always informing how formal governments (local & national) govern? Are the actors in these spaces & specific sectors connected?
NEW | Kampala: Health, wellbeing and nutrition
More than 60% of Kampala’s 2.3 million residents reside in informal settlements.
Yet despite the city being food-abundant, communities living in these neighbourhoods face significant barriers to accessing nutritious diets.
Unregistered low, medium and high-cost private schools are rising. Global south states struggle to regulate the sector weakening access to quality education. This Nigeria’s low-cost private schools are the only option for millions: is closing them a good idea? explores the debate

My research is available on @ResearchGate: https://t.co/IMfKHnF1wO Was reading the vernacular versions with some interest. Some of the ideas need revisiting not just for Mutoko's black granite but other minerals and non-mineral natural resources given rising concerns
Teachers ground cars as they struggle with ZBC radio licences.... Gov needs to empathise. The US$30 ZBC radio licence fees gazetted a few months ago has pushed the majority of civil servants over the cliff edge. Government workers are inundating The Mirror with complaints that they can't put their cars on the road this third vehicle term because they are failing to raise motor insurance, road and ZBC radio licence in light of their monthly salaries which are smaller than the sum amounts of the fees. Civil servants can hardly afford third party insurance which is the cheapest and the option now is to dispose their cars and this defeats a Government scheme to empower civil servants through free vehicle import duty. One teacher called to ask if it was possible to ground her car and get an exemption from Zinara while she finds a buyer for the car. Standards of living for civil servants, particularly teachers need to be arrested as they are going down every year. Zimnat cheapest insurances for a car is US$290 a year or US$93 a term, ZBC radio licence is US$30 a term and road licence is US$40 a term. Teachers monthly salaries are about US$200 plus a smaller portion in Zig.

Our captain wasn't in the game throughout. Keeper issues and defensive lapses, too.
Don't blame No. 30 as he never got a chance.
All the best in the next game

@econetzimbabwe, my day was ruined. No Internet services in my part of Waterfalls, Harare.
St such good prices you charge why hasn't there been an update.
My usually UNRELIABLE @TelOneZW WiFi refused to perform a miracle.
Your two companies care enough.
Zvakanaka hazvo.
Decolonisation = accept colonialists' denial of responsibility for enduring structural problems faced by their former and ongoing colonies. Mute coloniality. Debate ahistorically. Forget the past. Time-out blaming preindependence travails. Be silent. MOVE ON.
@TapiwaNyamukapa I am excited, elated in fact to let you know that one of my young friends has just become PhD holder. A smart sprint in under 3 years, testament to i) focus, ii) utilising chances, and iii) efficient self deployment.
Congratulations young man. Hat off.
Focus was policy vision, which ought to trigger devolved spatial & infrastructure planning
On enforcement, statement cited municipal bylaws (existing)
Citing unenforceability delays joint planning, often leads to evictions, & ignores that traders need dignified working spaces

They dig deep, take unstable soil & cart stable soil kilometres away, fill, ram ... final surfacing.
Yellow machines, tippers+, charge per hour. Zim's USD expenses are high
