I had the privilege of attending @bobsonwong and @LBukalov session on Promoting Mathematical Literacy with Annotation and Recitation at the NCTM 2023 Annual Conference, and it was truly engaging and inspiring! #NCTMDC23#MathLiteracy@NCTM@MathforAmerica
We are #MfAProud to share the MƒA Master Teachers presenting at the #NCTMDC23 Annual Meeting over the next few days in Washington, DC! Join them in sharing ideas and solutions together: https://t.co/6IOq3UH8dZ.
DESMOS will translate it's activity builder content to Ukrainian. This will help approximately 10000 mathematics teachers in Ukraine to support their students whose school year is constantly interapted by russian invasion. @UkrainianMath@maanow@MathforAmerica@NCTM
Meet Yana, a 11-year-old girl who survived 🇷🇺 missile attack on #Kramatorsk in 2022 and lost her both legs. Yesterday, she was running a half-marathon with her brother Yaroslav in #Lviv. 🇺🇦 inner strength is much powerful than 🇷🇺 hatred. 📷:Vitaliy Hrabar
This year, https://t.co/HADIb7k4Xq will be able to provide two AMC 10/12 sessions each week: On Thursday from 16:30 to 18:00 (Kiyev time) starting September 14 and on Sunday from 16:00 to 18:30 (Kiyiv time) starting September 24. @MathforAmerica@NCTM@maanow

I wish more math educators in the US used reading a textbook as a powerful tool to support our students' learning. Here is the 🔗 to a Ukrainian magazine dedicated to this idea.https://t.co/PTv0p11SjY
Today Russia hit Ukrainian Danube agriculture ports.
Russia continues to look for a week link. So far, it has tried:
1. A blitz attack on Kyiv
2. A siege and destruction of Mariupol, including murdering tens of thousands of civilians.
3. A brutal grinding campaign in Bakhmut
4. Winter attacks on energy infrastructure, blackouts, freezing civilians
5. Torture, rape, and murder of civilians in occupied territories
6. Randomized terror across the country with drone and missile attacks
7. Targeted missile attacks on oil refineries and storage
8. Attacks and destruction of cultural symbols, historical buildings, churches and cathedrals
9. Forced deportations from occupied territories.
10. Separation of children from their parents and moving them to different parents
11. Kakhovka dam and flooding Kherson
12. Constant shelling of cities close to the front lines: Kharkiv, Sumy, Chernihiv, Kherson, Zaporizhzhia
11. And now an attack on ports and agricultural infrastructure
Most of these attacks are targeted at civilians.
Despite all of these attacks, Ukraine exists, fights back, adapts, and adjusts.
The economy is functioning. The military is holding the line and brining back the territory and people.
Russia has realized it can’t have Ukraine, so now it means to destroy it, making it unlivable.
I don’t think Russia wants to negotiate or, actually, anything at all. It wants to teach Ukraine and everyone a lesson: resist and you will be destroyed.
But it is not working. Ukraine has become a united nation. Ukrainian have shown the best of courage and humanity.
What’s next? Russia will continue to destroy Ukraine economy and terrorize people. Notice how it is wasting resources from the military perspective. It could have used all these drones and missiles on military targets, but … it goes after civilians and civilian infrastructure.
And Ukraine will continue to resist.
Eventually something will snap. Ukrainian believe it will be Putin and Russia. Putin believes it will be Ukrainians.
I am in the first camp. That why I am in Ukraine, staying here, fighting here.
Math teachers @bobsonwong and @LBukalov have developed short activities they call “equity tasks” to make their instruction more relevant and connected to their students' lives.
Check out 4 examples and a rubric inside: https://t.co/W8FIEvtgqr
After many delays due to relentless bombing of Ukraine Darina Vasilyeva and I were able to publish our text book The Group work in Mathematics Classroom for Ukrainian teachers. It's a available as free download https://t.co/F8Ji9Er2rJ
@LBukalov and I wrote this article for @Edutopia introducing the concept of equity tasks, which we use to spread out equity into more manageable activities throughout our packed math curricula. It includes a rubric for equity tasks. #MTBoS#ITeachMath

Sometimes we need to take a breath and realize what we are seeing here. The Ukrainians, using NATO equipment for only a few months, and without air superiority, are trying (and maybe succeeding) in driving back what was considered to be one of the world's greatest militaries.
