Kaka, hapa neno ‘desperation’ linatoka wapi? Hakuna mtu amesema tunapaswa ku-negotiate from the point of desperation. We snatched EACOP from Kenya, it was not a desperate but a strategic move.

The truth is, we are not that important in a global scene (at least not yet). Majority of our people are in absolute poverty. We are barely a $90 billion economy, and in real terms we are as poor as we could imagine, despite our potential.

Something to take note: we were not even well represented on a high level at the Nairobi Summit, which was held next door and where all these news of a refinery broke out. That should tell you how unimportant we are (I know wahafidhina watanimind nasema hivi). Again, big projects like these take years to be implemented, and decades to make sense on the national economy (leave aside macro economics). So we need them, as many as we can and we need them now.

My kids should not be the ones to have this conversation three decades later. Again, we can be as wazalendo as we could and bang our chest with whatever the pride we think we should have, but we are poor, underdeveloped and we are risking sending away investments worth billions like we did in the past.
