Eclipses tend to come in pairs.

Twice a year, during an eclipse season that lasts about 34 days, Sun, Moon, and Earth can nearly align. Then the new and full phases of the Moon, separated by just over 14 days, create a solar and a lunar eclipse.

But only rarely is the alignment at both new moon and full moon during a single eclipse season close enough to produce a pair with both total solar and lunar eclipses.

More often, partial eclipses are part of any eclipse season. But, the last eclipse season of 2026 did produce this fortnight-separated pairing of a total solar eclipse on August 12 (top) and an almost total lunar eclipse on the night of August 27/28. At New Moon, the solar eclipse was captured at Peñafiel, Spain near the begining of totality in this HDR composite image, revealing a flash of Bailey's beads and a golden solar corona.

At the following Full Moon, the deep partial lunar eclipse was recorded from Sèvres, France. Also an HDR composite, the image shows this partial eclipse at closer to half its 93 percent maximum phase, so about half the visible lunar disk appears darkened and reddened within Earth's umbral shadow. The coming eclipse season will see an annular solar eclipse on 2027 February 6 paired with a penumbral lunar eclipse on February 20/21.

Many of these views are firsts of their kind.

While this was a ton of work, I see it as practice, as one day I plan on capturing these images myself.

This total solar eclipse appeared not only poetically beautiful but scientifically interesting. Usually the solar corona appears white, and to some observers the corona of last week's total solar eclipse did appear this pearly color. But this time, totality observers in Spain saw a corona that appeared unusually golden. For one reason, from Spain, the totality occurred when the setting Sun was near the horizon. That low, sunlight travels through a large amount of air which scatters out blue light. An unusual amount of smoke in the air from nearby forest fires acted as a second filter, further scattering the remaining blue tones and deepening the already gold-dominated light. The HDR-processed, multiple-exposure featured image was captured from Benavente, Spain last week. One thing that did not appear golden was a hydrogen-glowing prominence that hovered over the Sun's left edge -- its original bright pink color survived.

Dlatego ja w ten weekend dałem synom prezent odwrotny. Trzy dni wakacji bez wygód: spali w aucie i pod namiotem. Jedli mielonkę z puszki. Zamiast pada dostali scyzoryk. Bunkry, zamki, słowiańskie osady, brud za paznokciami i kąpiele w jeziorze.

Stać mnie na pięć gwiazdek i właśnie dlatego ich nie wybrałem.

Bo współczesny rodzic ma jedną religię: żeby dziecku było wygodnie. Wygodnie w domu, wygodnie w aucie, wygodnie na wakacjach. A potem to samo dziecko, dwadzieścia lat pó��niej, ma nerwicę i podniesiony kortyzol, kiedy coś nie dzieje się tak, jak chce. Mam dość tego, co robimy dzieciom, wmawiając sobie, że "dajemy im to, co najlepsze".

Gówno prawda. To nie jest dawanie, to jest zabieranie.

Zabieranie skali porównawczej, odporności, głodu, radości z małych rzeczy.

Dziecko, które zna tylko all inclusive plus, nie wie, że to luksus. Myśli, że tak działa świat. I potem świat mu to brutalnie wyjaśnia i to w najgorszym możliwym momencie, kiedy ciebie już nie ma obok.

Ja dałem im perspektywę, z którą miliony ludzi mierzą się na co dzień, a której wiele współczesnych dzieciaków nie zna: zmęczenie i głód. Zwykły, fizyczny głód po całym dniu łażenia po bunkrach, przy którym mielonka z puszki smakuje jak stek. I zmęczenie, po którym w aucie zasypia się w połowie zdania, szybciej niż w penthousie na królewskim materacu.

A wieczorami, przy kuchence, działo się coś, czego nie widziałem od miesięcy. Zaczęli GADAĆ. Nie o Minecrafcie, youtuberach i 67 tylko o tym co czuje, o strachach, o tym kim chcą być kiedyś. Chłopak nie otwiera się kiedy TY chcesz żeby to się stało- przy stole na godzinnym "quality time". Otwiera się w trzeciej dobie męczącej podróży w której coś naprawdę przeżył i doświadczył i jest z siebie dumy, bo odpowiada za całą resztę sam gotując kolację albo nawigując całą podróż za pomocą mapy.

Nie mówię, że All inclusive plus jest złe, kiedyś też tak pojedziemy ale dopiero kiedy już będą wiedzieli, że to nagroda. A nie norma.
