We found that the purinergic receptor P2X4 protects against neuroinflammation, but only in females. Why? 🧵👇
📢🧠 New preprint from our group available on @medrxivpreprint.
In this longitudinal study in early untreated RRMS patients, circulating M-MDSCs were associated with immune regulatory dynamics and better relapse recovery.
Congratulations to all authors!

Following Bolaños & Magistretti’s October 2025 review on the neuron–astrocyte metabolic unit, the November 2025 Nature Metabolism review by Asimakidou, Pluchino, Silva and colleagues brings microglia–neuron interactions into the discussion.
They are not examining the same cellular mechanism, what connects them is the broader move to place neuronal function within the cellular interactions that shape brain metabolism and brain function.
The November review adds the neuroimmune dimension, linking microglial metabolism to cognition, ageing, and disease.
Does brain aging always mean vessel loss?
🧠We found a surprising hypervascularization, driving cognitive decline & blood-brain barrier damage in aging. 👇🧵https://t.co/i3pWeowcLQ Led by @MihailMuc
Take a look at our new article! We demonstrate that the Alzheimer´s disease gene Presenilin regulates tau pathology via the autophagy & proteasome pathways. Funded by @CienciaGob@AgEInves@CIBER_ISCIII#CIBERNED@_BrightFocus@INC_UAB https://t.co/jneW86C1n3
Today I submitted my review of a manuscript for a journal, which I will not name, and then received the comments sent to authors. There were 7 reviewers!!! Have we lost all sense?

3) This reveals that sex hormones shape neuroinflammatory outcomes through direct modulation of microglial P2X4 function, opening the door to precision, sex-aware therapeutic strategies for MS.
What happens to the brain after focal myelin loss? Our new paper, published today in @Nature tries to answer this question: https://t.co/dCM1kcPd5N
