Remembering the great Count Basie who was born on this day in 1904. Noted for his spare, economical piano style and for his leadership of influential and widely heralded big bands, Basie is considered as one of the greatest bandleaders of all time.

Over a sixty-plus year career, he helped to establish jazz as a serious art form played not just in clubs but in theaters and concert halls. He established swing as one of the predominant styles in jazz music and solidified the link between jazz and blues.
