I worked on these regulations in the Biden Admin. There’s a reason we didn’t do this.

The problem was that the biggest packers were deregulated so they could cut corners with cheaper unsafe practices. And their scale crushed the safer, better, smaller packers. Big packers can functionally not inspect meat, but smaller packers still had to. But farmers and ranchers had to still go to them because they had all the bargaining power. You just can’t get your livestock to market without them, not at scale anyway.

The solution is to break up the big packers, stop letting them abuse their bargaining power over farmers, make them play by the same safety rules, and stop making us sick.

This version is useless. It’s like trying to fight Walmart with farmers markets that have broken glass in the peaches.
