CDF LEADERSHIP SPOTLIGHT (PART 6)
Cynthia Maticha is a Zimbabwean human rights defender, gender equality activist, disability rights advocate and economic justice campaigner working at the intersection of law, human rights, gender justice, inclusive development and climate action. Her advocacy is rooted in challenging structural inequality, strengthening accountability and ensuring that marginalized voices are represented in public discourse and decision-making.
In 2024, Cynthia was recognized by Amnesty International Zimbabwe as Human Rights Defender of the Quarter for her sustained digital advocacy on human rights, with particular recognition of her work advancing disability rights and amplifying marginalized communities.
Her work has extended across Zimbabwe and the wider Southern African region. She has collaborated with civil society organizations, activists and lawyers in South Africa and Lesotho, contributing to solidarity efforts supporting human rights defenders and amplifying the voices of incarcerated activists. She is also an established article writer whose work has brought women’s rights, gender inequality, disability inclusion, economic justice and climate justice into wider public conversations.
Cynthia’s commitment to accountability and economic justice was recognized in 2025 when she received the Best Emerging Leader Award from Transparency International Zimbabwe’s School of Integrity. She is also a Bloomberg Philanthropies recipient, having worked alongside young climate activists to advance innovative approaches to climate action and environmental justice.
She currently serves as a Women’s Rights and Gender Equality Facilitator with FEMLEX an international organization, contributing to advocacy and learning on international legal frameworks that protect and advance gender equality. Her work focuses on bridging the gap between international human rights standards and the realities experienced by women and marginalized communities.
Beyond traditional advocacy, Cynthia is known for her distinctive use of writing and documentation as tools for social change. She believes that documenting injustice is an act of accountability, that storytelling can shift public consciousness and that the written word can create solidarity across borders.
A committed “Write for Rights” activist, Cynthia uses her voice and her pen to challenge injustice, document lived realities and advocate for a more equal and accountable society.

We all want a clean, well-planned and progressive country. But if homes must be demolished because they were built on inappropriate land, people should first be relocated to proper accommodation. Build decent housing, move the families safely, and then proceed with the demolitions. Development should never mean leaving families homeless and stranded. Do it with humanity, dignity and proper planning.

When an impoverished citizen is bussed across provinces to dance in the dust for a piece of fried chicken, a bread roll, and the very elites who collapsed their currency, it is no longer just political theater, it is a choreographed ritual of self-abasement. The spectacle of Munhumutapa Day against the ancient stones of Great Zimbabwe laid bare the devastating mechanics of modern Zimbabwean patronage: an engineered state of starvation where biological survival is weaponized to dismantle civic dignity, while an untouchable caste of mbingas and tenderpreneurs flaunts unearned wealth without a shred of shame. How did a nation’s founding promise decay into a system where the dispossessed are compelled to applaud the architects of their own suffering, and what will it actually take to shatter this cycle and reclaim our collective sovereignty?
Fight Inequality Alliance (@FiaZimbabwe) National Coordinator Nqobizitha Mlambo is calling on citizens to sign the Cost of Living Petition, which will be presented to Finance Ministers meeting in Bangkok in October. The petition highlights the rising cost of everyday life and calls for action to address the growing cost-of-living crisis.
