3️⃣Successful Control of Emotional Expression in LLM Outputs: We provide causal evidence that by manipulating small sets of these interpretable emotion-specific features, we can precisely and naturalistically steer the emotional tone of an LLM’s output.
2️⃣LLMs encode fine-grained emotion in language in a way that mirrors human perception:interpretable, LLM-derived emotion features accurately predict nuanced affective ratings (valence and arousal) from large-scale human behavioral datasets across English and Chinese
1️⃣Human-Aligned Emotional Structure: computational emotion spaces are constructed from interpretable features within LLMs. The geometry of these spaces is anchord in valence and arousal, i.e., the two core dimensions that underpin psychological theories of human emotion.
The brain does not perceive speech, process language, or represent conceptual knowledge. It performs adaptive tasks that involve these things. Start with the adaptive task you want to understand and then work out that system. It will all make much more sense.
#JNeurosci: Qin, Lyu et al. @PKU1898 challenge the view that visual word form area (VWFA) is specialized for reading or more general visual processes & demonstrate how this site is modulated by the frontal-parietal control network.
