@Potatopolitics And I mean no disrespect to Bill Nye! Being able to make an academic field entertaining is a real skill! It's just that it's not the same thing as being the pre-eminent authority on the subject.
@Potatopolitics I think people see Zizek and think "wow, academic philosophy is super entertaining!" and not "wow, this academic philosopher does seem to be more interested in being an entertainer". Taking him seriously is a bit like calling Bill Nye the greatest scientific mind of the age.
Skinamarink really is just Blair Witch - experimental to the point of being urban-legend basic, super subtle tension and creepypasta-level release, ultimately more Rorschach test than statement, and had one scene that scared me more than most other horror movies in their entirety
At the start of this, no paper I read billed Kate Forbes as "the architect of the hugely successful X policy." She was, in sum, "Cambridge-educated and bilingual." Everybody else got a CV and she got a letter of recommendation.
I'm not even sure where the "kate forbes is extremely competent" stuff came from. Nobody who was particularly competent would have responded to those interviews in the way that she did
Yousaf vs Forbes, both answering the question about how they would handle marriage equality as a legislator. They did not give the same answer justified by different holy books. They gave opposite answers.
In 2018, "Parachute use to prevent death and major trauma when jumping from aircraft: randomized controlled trial" was published in the British Medical Journal.
It sought to determine if wearing a parachute when jumping from a plane had any impact on survivability.
It did not.
@pphaneuf@TimesRadio There’s nothing mystical about the gospels. They are first hand eye witness accounts. They’re either a deliberate, impeccably coordinated hoax, or they are true. Don’t go conning yourself with any nonsense about them being mystical or mythical. That option doesn’t exist.
Oh he's for sure going to get "you forgot poland"-ed. He's a policy wonk with no backbone. Some Tory's going to accuse him of costing us 50 billion in investments or whatever, he's gonna say "it's actually 49 billion" and never recover.
given starmer is riding high at the moment, think it’s interesting to think about which of his weaknesses/early decisions will ultimately bring about his demise. with blair, cameron, johnson i think you can make argument that what ultimately brought them down was present early on
The results of the world’s largest trial of a 4-day week (with no loss of pay) are out:
▪️ No drop in revenue
▪️ 65% fewer sick days
▪️ 71% less burnout
▪️ 92% of companies decide to keep the policy after the trial
The conclusion is clear: we need a shorter working week.
Forbes is just a fascinating timelapse of what the eventual collapse of the current era of transphobia will look like, in that after diligently seeking out the opinions of educated well-dressed transphobes society will be shocked to find that they're all absolutely bugfuck nuts
