first time i encountered this was while watching lost, and i assumed that the first episode was called Pilot because pilots fly planes and the show is about a plane crash

@LOSERVILL3 genuine answer, pilots arent just Episode 1 of a show, they’re a singular episode that function as a proof of concept to get funding for the rest of the series. sometimes the pilot is made years before the rest of season 1. the simpsons pilot is a chilling example of this
