It is not enough to ramp up diplomacy to get Ethiopia and Eritrea to respect each other's sovereignty. Similarly, its not enough to simply try to restart Pretoria, which never involved Eritrea to begin with. Nor is Obasanjo the person to do any of this.

Sadly, while there may be a collective sense of urgency there is no big picture thinking. Calling out Abiy on his BS national dialogue, forcing him to deal first with his internal ethnic feuds and reformin the state, in addition to mediating the real animosity between Addis and Asmara, while also finding a final mediated solution to Ethiopia's real need and demand for its own commercial port access are all requirements over breaking the cycle of war and recrimination that plagues the region. That will involve neighboring and regional states, along with a truly dedicated diplomatic effort, none of which appears visible. Dear Laura:

I am writing to bring to your attention a self-confessed Ethiopian thug named Habtamu Gurmu Chala (@Habtishgreat), currently residing in Madison, Alabama, and milking American taxpayer money. The attached video contains his own words, in which he states that he is a criminal who looted millions from Wegagen Bank in Ethiopia. The audio was recorded by a man based in the United Kingdom who goes by the name Triangleman. He was the one interviewing Habtamu in public and pressed him until he confessed. Triangleman has an extended audio recording of the full exchange as evidence. I would be happy to testify to the authenticity of the recording.

Justice has already knocked on the doors of Congresswoman Ilhan Omar. That same justice should bring this thug to account and deport him back to Ethiopia. Lying to federal authorities during an asylum application is a federal offense. I am also attaching a photograph of Habtamu taken at the federal police headquarters in Addis Ababa, the very country where he claimed he was persecuted. He has been known to harass a number of members of the American diaspora in the United States. Some of those individuals went to court and obtained restraining orders against him. Those orders are a matter of public record. The individuals live in the United States and some may be willing to testify. The attached photographs show him at the federal police in Addis Ababa, where he is suspected of acting as an informant against American citizens of Ethiopian origin and of reporting to the regime in Addis Ababa. Habtamu has also promoted female genital mutilation on X Spaces. A man with this record is a danger to American society. Please look into this matter. The video, audio, and photographs are attached.
