I am currently recruiting two graduate students (PhD or MSc) to work on caribou habitat management in Ontario at Lakehead University. Please repost and circulate to interested parties, and please contact me for further details!
We are recruiting a PhD student for January 2025 to study urban coyote movement behavior and space use in South Florida. Help us better understand how coyotes behave and persist in this complex and interesting urban landscape. Job posting: https://t.co/6lYH65lCnN

I’m looking for a postdoc (quantitative wildlife ecologist) to join our team to estimate white-tailed deer density and group size using camera traps (with implications for pathogen spread). https://t.co/FSL9vPobmX
@MelanieDickie @festa_bianchet I would rephrase "most" to "some", sorry. We often cannot control the media spin. Not your fault but it is sad to see this good paper on wtd used by others to create this narrative.
@MelanieDickie @festa_bianchet I agree. But it's kind of sad that during the media spin of the paper most of the attention was towards caribou. One example: "Climate change, not habitat loss, may be the biggest threat to the survival of threatened caribou herds, new research suggests".
@MattD_Hyde @RyanKBrook We are testing the devices in boreal forest with some open areas and few deciduous stands. I think they were initially designed for cattle.
@RyanKBrook @MattD_Hyde Ear tag ~ 25g.
30 sec. to fix on animal.
No problem of neck swelling during rut or growth --> collar fit is difficult for males and yearling (depending on species) and ear tag doesn't matter.
About 1/10 of the price of a collar.
It may not replace a collar, but complementary.
@RyanKBrook @MattD_Hyde No long term memory, the data is sent using Globalstar at every fix. If the transmission doesn't work, the data lost. There are some parameters you can play with to maximize data acquisition/transmission vs battery consumption.
@RyanKBrook @MattD_Hyde I am field testing GSat Solar ear tag on white-tailed deer for the past 3 months. Everything is running smoothly with 1 position every 5h. Battery goes from 25% to 90% depending on sun/cloud cover. Need to be careful with cold temperatures and tree cover that limit sunlight.

NEW PAPER: We followed the fate of 40 caribou herds —the southern mountain caribou population—to assess their trajectory and response to recovery actions. What we found was surprising and bitter sweet: dramatic declines but recent recovery due to controversial measures. 🧵 (1/n)
