Most YA novels are missing a parent or authority figure but it’s really interesting how by the end of the book you can see that Alma and Char kind of play the part when they “hand down” the business to Mia and leave her in charge as they settle into retirement #sdsuYA

It’s amazing how often there is a vast sense of loneliness emitted from one panel while a sense of comfort can radiate on the very next. There is an incredible balance that can be felt when reading On a Sunbeam #sdsuYA

Zélie in some ways does embody the YA trope of the denial of becoming “the hero”, with her denail of being the only one who has the power to bring magic back. Percy Jackson-esque in a way.

I found it fascinating that even when switching perspectives to other characters, we’re left without facial description. I think this functions dually as a means of commenting on beauty ideals, as discussed, but also keeping us immersed most deeply in Finn’s perspective #sdsuYA

After reading García’s article, I came to the conclusion that Nala’s mission directly opposes revolution / equality and cannot exist peacefully in the same space. Nala’s goals must be stopped in order for any progress to come #sdsuYA
