@ChuckGrinstead @JoeMaristela @JoeBiden No, it was not all about taxation. While the federal government has the right to tax states, it had no way to enforce collection of taxes. It was mainly about federal versus state power, an issue that had existed since the founding.

@MrInkedhands @JoeMaristela @JoeBiden The Emancipation Proclamation did NOT free enslaved people. It freed all enslaved people in the Confederacy (except TN) which Lincoln didn't have the authority to do because the Confederate states had seceeded and were their own country at the time.

The Articles of Confederation and the inability of the federal government to collect taxes, plus states' rights versus federal/national rights were the main reasons for the war. Slavery was added in later.

The Republican Party of Lincoln espoused the same basic ideology that the Democratic Party does today. That's because all of the southern Democrats left the party after the passage of the Civil Rights Act in 1964.

@JoeBiden was the primary reason. National/federal rights versus states' rights was second, slavery is included in that. But it was an opportunistic move to Grand the war as being about slavery in order to give the Union a moral high ground.

@JoeBiden It was about several things, as all problems that blow up into a war are. It was mainly about the fact that the Articles of Confederation didn't give the federal government any way to collect taxes from the states, so the federal government was going broke (to break it down). (1)
