Under Yankee Stadium, a Red Sox jersey buried under Yankee stadium. In late 2007, Red Sox fan and construction worker Gino Castignoli secretly buried a David Ortiz jersey in the concrete of the under-construction Yankee Stadium, hoping to curse the team.
By April 2008, word of the prank had leaked to the media, and on April 13, 2008, Yankees officials jackhammered through two feet of concrete to retrieve the jersey.
Rather than destroy it, they donated the jersey to Boston’s Jimmy Fund a Red Sox affiliated charity supporting cancer care and research which auctioned it on eBay.
On April 24, 2008, the tattered Ortiz jersey sold for $175,100, with all proceeds going to pediatric cancer research.
