As babesiosis incidence continues to rise worldwide 🌎, our Babesia divergens ribosome structure lays the groundwork for studying newly reported rRNA modifications and identifying parasite-specific vulnerabilities for therapeutic intervention.
Combining single-particle cryo-EM and nanopore sequencing enabled us to map rRNA modifications in the Babesia ribosome, including nearly half that have not been reported in any organism 😲 These novel modifications span minimized expansion segments and key functional regions.
