Just 48 is trending because Nigerians are shocked seeing Gambian youths shutdown the country protesting over ordinary 2-days blackout.

Nigeria’s average electricity generation is 4,384MW. In Gambia it is a whopping 78MW, peaking at 106MW, which ~50% is imported.

The crisis in Gambia started around April. When generation dropped, and usage surged, which the Gambian government blamed on fuel procurement, logistical constraints, and global supply disruptions.

It advised conservation to avert a total blackout. But as the country entered the dry season in June, the blackout began and worsened. Electricity demand surged, while the government blamed the weather, reduced hydropower output and technical problems.

Last week it got worse, partial blackout, became total. With the heat reaching 35°c, no water, and food spoiling., on Monday 7 September, Gambians stormed the streets, burning tyres, blocking traffic, demanding better governance chanting “Barrow Must Go” — Adama Barrow is the President.

They took the protest to the official homes of President Barrow and the VP, Mohammed B.S. Jallow; clashed with police, destroyed properties and facilities belonging to the ruling party, resulting to the police dispersing them with tear gas and a ban on unauthorized protests.

11 persons were arrested, per Reuters. As the protest slowly metamorphosed from electricity demonstrations into a political demonstration, which protesters admitted was about the prolonged hardship.

The President addressed the nation, directly acknowledged their concerns and promised that an additional 24MW will be added by October, along with a 50MW solar plant. Yet the protest continued.

Nigerians are surprised and impressed by the rookie number of just 2 days of blackout that was enough to trigger a protest.

Understandably so, because recently
a community in Uli, Anambra State, had its electricity restored after 20yrs. Last month, Utagbe-Ogbe in Delta State also had electricity restored after 16 years of blackout.

However, patriotic Nigerians rejected the Gambia-Nigeria comparison, arguing that Nigeria is 20x the size of Gambia.
