Ronald Koeman has informed the Dutch Football Association (KNVB) that he will not extend his contract as head coach of the Netherlands national team when it expires. The 63-year-old announced his decision one day after the Netherlands were eliminated from the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Oranje were knocked out in the Round of 32 after losing a penalty shootout to Morocco. This marks the end of Koeman's second spell as head coach.
"Precisely because I have worked so closely and intensively with this coaching staff and this group of players for such a long time, this was not an easy decision to make," said Ronald Koeman. "I am grateful and would like to express my sincere appreciation for the dedication shown by everyone involved with Oranje during both of my periods as head coach.
"Of course, it is deeply disappointing that our World Cup campaign has ended so early. But once I have had time to process it and look back, I will mainly remember the great cooperation and the many wonderful moments we shared together. I would therefore like to thank everyone who contributed to that. I have decided that now is the right time to spend more time with my wife, children, and grandchildren. At this moment, it feels like the right and most natural decision."
🚨Jürgen Klopp on Cody Gakpo breaking down in tears after scoring against Morocco in the FIFA World Cup Round of 32:
🗣️ “There are moments in football when the result becomes completely secondary. If Cody Gakpo has gone through such heartbreaking personal loss and still found the strength to step onto the pitch, then he deserves nothing but respect. That takes incredible courage.”
“When he scored and the emotions came out, you could see it wasn't just about football. Sometimes a goal becomes an expression of everything a person has been carrying inside. In moments like that, we are reminded that players are human beings before they are footballers.”
“My thoughts are with Cody and his family. No one should ever have to experience that kind of pain, but the way he carried himself tonight showed remarkable strength and resilience.”
“I hope people remember this moment not because of the scoreline, but because it reminded us of the power of love, family and the human spirit. Football can unite people, but compassion is always more important than the game itself.”
🚨 Cody Gakpo on the Netherlands’ heartbreaking FIFA World Cup exit to Morocco:
🗣️ “This is one of the hardest nights of my career. We came into this tournament believing we could go all the way, and to leave like this is painful beyond words. We dreamed of bringing joy to our country, but tonight we’re going home with nothing but heartbreak.”
“My goal meant everything to me in that moment, especially because of everything my family and I have been carrying. My partner and I recently lost our baby, and that is a pain no words can truly describe. I carried that grief with me every single day throughout this tournament. I tried to turn that pain into strength for my family, for my teammates and for my country. To experience that loss and then leave the World Cup like this… it hurts in a way I can’t explain.”
“I don’t want to take anything away from Morocco because they were outstanding. They fought for every ball, believed until the very end and showed incredible heart. They earned this victory, and I have nothing but respect for them. Sometimes football rewards the team that refuses to stop believing.”
“To the Dutch supporters, I’m sorry we couldn’t give you the ending you deserved. We know how much this team means to you, and we know this defeat will stay with you for a long time. Believe me, nobody feels that pain more than the players sitting in our dressing room tonight.”
“I’ll take time to heal, both as a footballer and as a person. Some battles happen on the pitch, others happen far away from the stadium. I’ll keep fighting through both. This tournament has ended in disappointment, but I know one day these painful moments will make me stronger, and when that day comes, I’ll be ready to give everything for the Netherlands again.”
