Reports from Morocco say Moroccan women’s footballer Faten Ben Omar Al Azizi has died while trying to cross into Ceuta.
While the debate continues to focus on sovereignty disputes, there are young lives on the ground risking everything in the hope of finding a better future.
BAE systems will get an extra ~£6bn today it seems - no questions asked.
Barrow-in-Furness is one of the most deprived areas in the United Kingdom despite the BAE systems submarine factory there.
That’s what a war economy will get you.
🚨Israel's style of "co-existence" in Jaffa, by War Minister Yoav Gallant:
His father stole a Palestinian home & squatted in it, even though a family was still inside. That family was forced to live with Gallant & share a bathroom & kitchen until Gallant took them to Ramallah & kept the rest of the house.
Gallant is narrating this with pride as some sort of a beautiful kumbaya story.
Yoav Gallant is named after "Operation Yoav"; a major terrorist attack which his father took part in. The operation saw the carpet bombing, ethnic cleansing & full destruction of 30 Palestinian villages, including my own family's village. All the Palestinian inhabitants were loaded on trucks at gunpoint & sent to Gaza.
Gallant was the Israeli war minister that called the very people his father ethnically cleansed to Gaza "Human Animals" & vowed to ban "all food, water, medicine, fuel & electricity" to the population his father caged in this enclave.
Gallant is wanted by the International Criminal Court for crimes against humanity & war crimes.
This sort of analysis is what emerges when Marxism is stripped of its Hegelian and Viconian roots. The Marxist project is ultimately about the destruction of binaries like economics/politics, not their reification.
The City is at a critical point where this rise of the right goes unchallenged and it will dominate, or they are tackled head on and put back underneath the rock where they belong.
My heart still has hope that they are a noisy minority. But the majority have to stand up to this.
Under the spell of prophetic fantasies, the Trojan refugees metamorphose into their Greek persecutors. Aeneas, once rational and compassionate, becomes a new Achilles, crazed by destiny and ready to build the future upon blood sacrifices, violated treaties, and Turnus's corpse.
For part of the war and again for several weeks during the ceasefire, I lived alone in an abandoned hotel. The staff had fled the war zone, leaving me with the keys. The arrangement seemed implausible, almost allegorical: a functioning hotel emptied of guests, of service, of purpose. I shared it only with two dogs and a scattering of other animals that occupied the vacuum left by people.
Its isolation altered the hierarchy of sounds. At night, there were the hyenas laughing somewhere beyond the property, the frogs that had claimed the swimming pool, and, above everything else, the constant hum of the low-flying, armed Israeli drone. Around these persistent noises came the intermittent concussions of bombardment, the artillery shelling in the hills of Mansouri as the Israeli army advanced, and the sharper punctuation of drone strikes. The silence was never silence.
The hotel acquired the atmosphere of a place that had outlived its own function. It felt less abandoned than suspended, as though waiting for an event that had already occurred. By day I left to work, always returning before dark because darkness belonged to other calculations. On some afternoons, the drones descended so low over the property that it seemed impossible not to imagine myself already incorporated into their field of vision. Surely the IDF knew I was there.
The solitude gradually became ordinary. Ordinary enough that I planned to deliver a scheduled lecture to students at a Dutch university from that improbable refuge. I had set up my computer and was preparing to begin when a forced displacement order arrived. The lecture never happened. I left within minutes, frantically trying to pack and communicate with the professor at the same time. I did not return for several weeks.
A few days before I fled, I had photographed the hotel. At the time, I thought I was recording its strange, spectral atmosphere. Looking at the images now, it’s clear that they documented something else as well: the peculiar stillness that war sometimes produces, when abandonment itself becomes another form of occupation.
The Odyssey is only 'foundational' to Western identity in the sense that it celebrates an aristocrat who uses deception to annihilate an Eastern city and desecrate its holy sites, throws its children off its walls, and bonds with his son by hanging their enslaved women together.
The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) mourns the internationalist freedom fighter and revolutionary, Kozo Okamoto, one of the heroes of the Lod Airport operation, who passed away among the Palestinian refugees to whom he belonged and for whose return he fought.
The idea that these soldiers, who made a conscious decision to become service members, died "for Netanyahu" is such cheap misrepresentation of the function of the US military and serves as a kind of propaganda that obscures imperial violence and how it is enforced globally
‘Russia’s illegal war in Ukraine’ but only ‘conflict in the Middle East’: Ed Miliband compromises his commitment to ‘international law’ before he has even got off the ground.
Let me put it right for you, Ed (and by the way, I knew your father, who you refer to—he was always for calling things by their proper names):
1. Israel’s genocide in Gaza.
2. The USA and Israel’s illegal war on Iran.
3. Israel’s illegal occupations of the West Bank, East Jerusalem, Gaza and southern Lebanon.
4. The Labour government’s conspiracy with Israel to provide surveillance and arms used in its genocide.
5. Labour’s conspiracy with the USA to enable it to carry out its aggression against Iran from UK bases.
This, and more, is what you have to address if you are you to be any more credible in your commitment to international law than your unlamented predecessors as UK Foreign Secretary.
Inspiring to have watched English liberals spin themselves into thinking Burnham would represent a change, only to be given Neocons with a Northern Soul soundtrack.
