500 Words is now open!

Children aged 5 –11 can now enter the 500 Words competition , giving them the chance to let their imaginations run wild and share a story of 500 words or fewer.

Stories can be about anything and are judged on creativity, character, plot and originality.

Entries are open until Friday 6 November at 9pm.

Today is #HobbitDay because Bilbo and Frodo Baggins were both born on September 22nd.
Normally we'd shire a hobbit pun or two but it might just feel like a tolkien gesture and we don't want to embarrass our elves.

Why do I offer all of my school visits entirely free of charge?

Let me say this clearly, because it needs saying in July.
Schools are closed. Teachers are resting. The reading records have stopped.
But the librarians are still there.
Running the summer challenge. Stamping the cards. Finding the next book for the child who just finished one.
For six weeks every summer, librarians are the entire reading system.
They hold it together, quietly, on reduced budgets, and they have done it for generations.
I thank every librarian working this summer. You are the difference.

Research shows that children who grow up with rhyme and rhythm find learning to read easier. It helps them hear the patterns inside words... which is one of the real building blocks of reading. So that bedtime story is doing more than you think. 📖🌙

The librarian who fights to keep their library open is doing something extra special for their community. Libraries are an important part of a town, city or school. We should all be angry when they are closed. Those books are gateways to other worlds, new knowledge and places that the reader might never have known about. I want to thank all the amazing librarians out there. We see you.
