Thank you to @washingtonpost for covering this important but underrecognized health issue!
What is PMDD? For these sufferers, itβs a monthly struggle. https://t.co/rfhjV7qB06
New paper out! We found that gastrointestinal (GI) symptoms were reported more frequently in the premenstrual phase than the follicular phase, and greater mood symptoms were associated with more GI symptoms. https://t.co/VvsxBtIGbE
Co-authored this commentary by members of the @IAPMD_clinical advisory board. We need to recognize suicidality as common symptom of #PMDD, in no small part so people including clinicians understand how severe and life-threatening this diagnosis can be.
Awesome commentary from @LiisVH on the meager size of the NIH-funded #PMDD field and related research investments relative to #PPD. There are so few labs focused on psychiatric fx of the menstrual cycle-- we need more funding for building our workforce. https://t.co/GqHPJJj54d
@LiisaGalea thanks so much for a fantastic #womenshealth#OSSD24 pre-conference (and the main event of course!), and for @LeunerLab for chairing the session on #depression in women!
@LeunerLab Up next is @LiisVH talking about PMDD. (I like the way she spells her name..) how might allopregnanolone be involved in PMDD? SSRIs work really rapidly in PMDD (diff time scale than MDD -this suggests diff mechanism than MDD due to rapid effects)
Thanks @IAPMDglobal! It was an honor to lead this research. I'm grateful to @NIH for providing funds to support it, and grateful to all of the volunteers who participated!
IAPMD CAB member Dr. Liisa Hantsoo was among researchers in study examining impact of low-dose SSRI treatment on peripheral levels of GABAergic neuroactive steroid hormones in women with PMDD - a glimpse into the mystery of how SSRIs tend to work rapidly & at low doses in PMDD.

2) Women are at higher risk for depression than men, particularly in the reproductive years. Many factors likely contribute! In this review, we focus on the role of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, and how it might interact with shifting sex hormones across the lifespan.
1) SSRIs like sertraline behave in interesting ways in premenstrual mood symptoms - they work quickly and at low doses. How? We don't know! One idea is that SSRIs increase levels of neuroactive steroid hormones with anti-anxiety effects. Our research supports this!
This has been a very papery week! Excited to have 2 new papers out: 1) original research from my lab showing that the #antidepressant sertraline increases levels of pregnanolone premenstrually in #PMDD, 2) a review of #HPA axis function in #depression across the female lifespan.
Thanks to @IAPMD_clinical professional community for hosting me today for a webinar on accounting for the menstrual cycle in psychophysiology studies. Had a great time! #IAPMDprocomm#cyclescience
Had such a great time at #SOBP2023! So fun to talk with colleagues about their work, and to see @TamarGurMDPhD @eisenlohr_moul@KimmelLab@jpayne37@NeillEppersonMD and so many others in person again! Now back at home with my little pup pal!
