27 microhabits that will change your life:
1. Follow the One Minute Rule: If something takes one minute (responding to a text, hanging a jacket etc..) or less to complete do it immediately.
How do you stop wasting your time and living with a sense of urgency? By truly realizing that you can die at any moment.
"So what is the reason for this? You are living as if destined to live for ever; your own frailty never occurs to you..." - Seneca, On the Shortness of Life
We intellectually know that we could die at any time, but if we don't feel it in our day-to-day existence, we will never live with any sense of urgency. Death will always feel like something that is far off in the future.
If you make death a constant presence in your mind, you will naturally live with a sense of urgency. And death becomes a constant presence in your mind when you make it an important part of your life philosophy and identity. But why would I do that, you think.
There is a reason all ancient philosophers thought that philosophy was about learning how to die.
"But learning how to live takes a whole life, and, which may surprise you more, it takes a whole life to learn how to die." - Seneca, On the Shortness of Life
What holds people back from living a full life is fear, and no fear is greater than the fear of death. So truly, there is no difference between overcoming the fear of death and learning to live a full life.
That is why I believe all the ancient sages thought it was important to keep death in mind. Only by overcoming the fear of death could one live up to their highest potential.
"...whenever his last day comes, the wise man will not hesitate to meet death with a firm step." - Seneca, On the Shortness of Life
What is the mark of a sage? His virtue.
What is the highest expression of virtue? To place death before dishonour.
"a man who is good for anything ought not to calculate the chance of living or dying; he ought only to consider whether in doing anything he is doing right or wrong—acting the part of a good man or of a bad." - Socrates, Apology
The way to live with urgency is to keep death in mind, and the way to keep death in mind is to realize this: the fear of death is the one obstacle you have to overcome in order to reach your highest potential.
"It is the mind which is tranquil and free from care which can roam through all the stages of its life: the minds of the preoccupied, as if harnessed in a yoke, cannot turn round and look behind them. So their lives vanish into an abyss..." - Seneca, On the Shortness of Life
Aber die Abende sind mild und mein,
von meinem Schauen sind sie still beschienen;
in meinem Armen schlafen Wälder ein,
- und ich bin selbst das Klingen über ihnen,
und mit dem Dunkel in den Violinen
verwandt durch all mein Dunkelsein.
Rainer Maria Rilke
People around you, constantly under the pull of their emotions, change their ideas by the day or by the hour, depending on their mood. You must never assume that what people say or do in a particular moment is a statement of their permanent desires.
