@thameswater recently told me that due to “fiscal constraints”, they can’t afford to fix all of the illegal outfalls on the River Roding by 2030 (already a more than fair deadline in the circumstances I feel).

This single one million pound payment to their finance chief would, alone, be enough to stop a billion litres of raw sewage a year entering the river in Ilford. Which other companies do we allow to commit serious crimes because they’ve taken money that should have been used to ensure their company complies with the law & given it to their execs instead? How long until the government says “no more” to these chancers & puts Thames Water out of its misery?

@RestoreBritain @novaramedia @AyoCaesar @AaronBastani This is the thing that the left don't seem to get. Monetary expansion (ie inflation) is hurting us badly. Anyone who doesn't hold assets is getting killed by inflation yet the left don't seem to acknowledge it at all. What d'ya think?

It's utterly ridiculous. It wouldn't make the @EnvAgency look bad if the rivers are getting worse ... it's not their fault! But talking bollocks makes them look corrupt.

My parents died suddenly in a car accident 25 years ago this year. I was 21, and became a guardian for my little brother and sister (10 and 12 at the time).

I've spoken about the accident and its impact on a couple of podcasts, but it's fresh on my mind as my brother just shared with me a handwritten letter I sent to him at his school. He's kept it with him ever since.

I've transcribed it below; he told me last night that it's helped him many times over the past two decades. Sharing it here in case what I said back then in an attempt to help a little lost boy is of assistance to anyone else.

To Harry, From Freddie.

1. Don't panic.

2. You have many people watching your back. I am one of them and I am watching it very closely.

3. The accident was nobody's fault. Therefore we cannot legitimately blame anyone for it. We call it an accident for this reason.

4. We cannot bring Mummy and Daddy back – but this has important consequences:
– We need to remember what they taught us.
– We need to behave as they would have wanted us to.
– Because they are not alive, but we are, we owe both ourselves and their memory a duty to live as well and as fully as we possibly can, not to give in, not to give up. Because of the accident we have been given a very special insight into what it means to be alive – to live as fully as we can, to consider others, to work at what we are good at, and work even harder at what is difficult.

Something has been wasted, something has been lost. We must make sure that our lives are not. We shall always regret that Mummy and Daddy are not here – let us not regret anything we do, or know that we had a chance and threw it away.

Whatever happens, I have got your back. Even if I do sometimes hit you with cricket balls.

Run straight, look your foe in the eye, and never back down. Strength and honour!

If they can move much of the inflated benefits, pension, SEND budgets into building council houses, I think we'd be onto something good.

Lifetime leases on good quality council houses builds community, connection, pride etc.

A stunning reminder of why we cannot give up on our rivers yesterday, as I stumbled across an adult eel on the Roding for the first time, lounging in the shallows in the shade of a council tower block & within earshot of the North Circular.

This now rare & magical sight used to be common, until eel populations crashed on the Roding in the 1980’s & have not recovered. Seeking to understand & reverse this population crash should surely be a key role for the governments environmental regulator, but as usual they have done nothing to improve water quality or remove barriers to eel migration. Worse, they are actively blocking my efforts to help the eel population recover.

Ordinarily, baby eels (elvers) for restocking are expensive to buy. However, I managed to secure a kind donation of elvers from fishermen on the River Severn (where the elvers often get stuck behind barriers on the river). I applied for my @EnvAgency restocking permit like a good boy & all they had to do to help recover eel populations on the Roding was to say yes. Perhaps predictably, my application was rejected, because there was no positive evidence that reintroducing eels to the Roding would be a good thing. Perhaps most annoyingly, my application to restock eels on the Roding was rejected because reintroducing them would interfere with the EA’s monitoring of their continued decline.

I asked what would happen if I went ahead & released the elvers anyway & was told that the EA would fine me up to £50,000. Yet another example of the malevolent uselessness of the EA: obsessed with procedure, but will do absolutely sod all to actually reverse the decline in our rivers.

They only fail to investigate when it’s trivial stuff like a huge oil slick covering everything on the river, or one of the UK’s biggest illegal waste dumps next to the river. For the serious stuff like a group of volunteers getting rubbish & silt out, they had a spy in our community Facebook group to find out it was us & a team of investigators down at the site within a week.
